Title: Battery Alternatives
Post by: Casey on January 15, 2019, 08:15:06 AM
I am using a LIPO battery (3200 mAh, 11.1v, 25C) to power my electric starter and to light up my glow plug simultaneously but I am uneasy about LIPO batteries given their unforgiving nature when not handled with tender loving care.

I was informed that LiFePO4 batteries are safer than LIPO batteries.

So anyone using LiFePO4 batteries to start their glows with an electric starter?

I haven't used them, but they are readily available with C ratings high enough for electric flight.  They apparently are more sensitive to charging current, voltage, and power draw.  They are different than regular LiPo's that way and are supposed to be safer.

This is a pretty good, conservative outline of how to use them.

A 4 cell A123 pack will have the same voltage as a 12 volt lead acid.
Much more tolerant of abuse than Lipo, safer ( no fire risk)  and should last a lot longer.

You can buy cells here:
