At the Bass Pro Shops I have seen an empty spool about 5"-6" in dia that would be good to store flying lines on.
Best I remember they have three spokes in then, how ever I can't find them on their web site..
Any suggestions???

I haven't been to Bass Pro for a while, but here's a good source for that kind of stuff.

Gil...I have some of those spools. If you want them, pay the postage, and you can have them. I never even opened the bags. They are probably in the Saltwater cattledog (sic), IIRC. Send me a PM! C&R, Steve

Yeah, you want leader spools. They cost about a buck at most stores.

If those are the narrow ones I tried them but had a lot of trouble with them. They kept warping so I added light ply to make them stronger but they didn't work well for me. The lines kept going over the side as I wound them on to the real. The small reels that the lines come on work much better. The large wide mouth reels are the best. I think Brodak and Sig sells them. I have a very old wide mouth one that a friend build in the 1950's that is made of 3/16 plywood with snap in handles that is my favorite.it is about 6" in dia. There was a construction article on it in one of the model magazines back then. There was one very similar in Flying Models recently.

I use clothes line pulleys. They are available at lowes and or home depot. They last forever. Just throw away the all but the pulley itself.

Back "in the day" another commom practice was to buy two cheap plastic dinner plates, bolt the them together on the bottoms and add handles to wind with.

I like the small 4" spools that come in red or blue, so if somebody has some they want to purge from their shop, I'll pay the postage! Some like the 5" spools, but they tend to leave their handle attached to the lines, which I don't do.
In May, I drove my fishin' buddy's truck to Livingston, TN, to pick up his new Phoenix bass boat (picture below). Next picture is of me on the front deck of same boat, on Lk. Washington. We were going to go together, but he had a bad result from his colonoscopy and had to start radiation treatments straight away. I ran the boat and fished on Dale Hollow Res. in TN and then Table Rock Lk. in MO. The trip took me 15 days, close to 6k miles. I liked the routes I took, but there was one tackle shop and a hobby shop (Central Hobby) I wanted to visit, and both were closed when I stopped by. :-\ Steve
