Title: Balsarite Fabric formula
Post by: ray copeland on February 24, 2014, 08:18:05 PM
My first try with Balsarite , did not know what the viscosity should be like. Tried brushing it on and made a thick gooey mess, this stuff needs to be thinned. Any ideas what to use to thin with? Would lacquer thinner work? The label says contains Toluene and Methy Ethyl Ketone, all i have is acetone and laquer thinner, would make a trip to the paint store if i knew what to get..  Any ideas?

Hello Ray, while I found this product to work so so, I used the Coverite Ironex product. Unfortunately, it's another product one must buy to use and you only need a little to thin it. I found the Balsarite very problematic using Monokote. I don't recall ever using Coverite coverings, but I believe they're more mesh like and this product would wick up into it better. The Monokote wanted to slide. Later on, I found the model receiving blisters or bubbles all throughout that just wouldn't iron down. The label on the can suggests it can be used for various films but I was wondering if it worked better  with their product intially. While my experience was so so, I think it's a good product and I'm not trying to deter anyone from trying it. I used it for the nose area which was oil soaked a bit and they did claim their was success in those types of areas and I will confirm that. Ken

Acetone worked for me. I thinned the Balsarite for fabric to about the same watery consistency as Balsarite for film covering. Couldn't tell the difference.

Thanks Bob for the update.  I too have wondered about thinning Balsarite.   Great for fabric coverings if it wasn't so thick.
