Title: Balsarite - Brodak dope ?
Post by: bob branch on February 24, 2007, 07:47:47 PM
A few questions:

1 Are Balsarite and Brodak dope compatable?

2 If compatable and balsarite has been put on the balsa, does dope bond chemically to it or do you have to sand it to give it tooth for the dope to hold onto? If so, to what grit?

Thanks

That is how I seal wood that has a little oil soaked in I could not get all the way out.  If I understand the can instructions it is compatible with about every thing.  I have used it under Brodak & SIG dope, K&B Epoxy and Rustoleum in the small paint cans.  Have not tried the spray rustoleum yet.  But, if in doubt try it on some old scrap or plane.  DOC Holliday

Repair is not my problem though. I have a framework with balsarite on it an am trying to figure out how to go about doing a Brodak dope finish on it.

Sorry, I misread your reply. Probably the funk I was in at having to strip the plane when partially covered. Thanks.

No worry, I have that problem too much lately.  I myself hate refinishing planes.  On my Oriental you can still see some of the old color under the new.  Of course I am not a very good finisher either.  DOC Holliday
