Title: Balsa storage rack
Post by: Bruce Perry on January 14, 2013, 06:59:10 PM
I'm interested in building a balsa storage rack at will allow individual compartments for various sizes of wood.  I would like the wood to be stored horizontally rather than vertically.  Does anyone have a plan for one?

I was planning to build it 2 feet wide and four feet tall. It will mount to the ceiling and have under cabinet lighting.  What I don't have is a good idea for how to make the compartments. I also am undecided about the material. Perhaps mdf?  I have a good router and had thought of using that to make grooves for 1/4 inch shelves. But that would mean lots of routing.  Anyway any ideas?

Me too and I don't have a router.

Or go the delux route.

Tim!   That would be awesome hey?  I'm about a million miles away from Sun Valley for pickup.....

That said its a great idea for storage.  Ill look for something like it closer.  I'm thinking a good jig and some intimate time with my router is the alternative....

I just searched on eBay for "flat file".

Ages ago I made a couple of benches for my wife to do stained glass work.  They featured lots of vertical slots to store sheets of glass.  I made the dividers from 1/4" hardboard, and used quarter-round molding to make the "slots" to slide the dividers into.

 I'll send pictures of mine.
I keep it under my work bench, stores all my balsa except larger blocks. Woork well for me.

Buy trhe cardboard box SIG uses for their displays.  I have one at home.  It comes unfolded.  Fold it out and use as needed.  Works fine for me.

However you decide to store your wood, I would make sure it's completely enclosed. Not sure if it's UV or exposure to air but the wood will turn brown and also CA resistant. I store my wood in old kit boxes, some of the sheets of 1/16 are marked $.20!

Around here, another reason to keep it covered are the termites. I wish I could train them, they drill really nice holes!
