Here's some pictures I took with my phone of the expert lineup and scoreboard.  I don't remember who won Advanced and Intermediate.  Joe Gilbert won profile and OTS and I believe Frank McMillian won classic.

This was a great contest! Great weather and great people! For my first contest in District VIII, I felt like I got welcomed with open arms! Can't wait to see everyone at the Tulsa contest in a few weeks.

I was at the contest and as always, the Texans put on a first class show! One of the highlights for me, was watching Doug Moon rock and roll with the great Bob Gieske's Bear. I got to put some stick time on Rich Oliver's Maverick. His Rojett 67 runs like a swiss watch,(no surprise as he is the designer). John Hill's "Texan" won the pilots choice award. Really beautiful ship.

I guess at 22 Y.O., that's a nice road trip! Either Dallas or Tulsa is farther than from here to Edmonton, tho I can usually find a longer route than anybody thought possible. Maybe next year, you can come to the NW CL Regionals, Golden State Stunt Champs, and Perry Fire?  Steve

There is no way to adequately express my gratitude to all who came and participated. "Participated" in this case means mostly working to keep things running smoothly; doing the large, no, huge, amount of work that is required. Then, getting in a flight or two or six.   EVERYONE helped out.

The Charles Ash contest began as the Southwestern Championships circa 1953, at this same site, Samuell Hobby Park, made available for model airplane activities exclusively by the Samuell family. The times, they have changed since then, land is no longer available for Free Flight and Radio Control, but, Control Line still chugs along. So the complete title could be "The Labor Day Charles Ash/Southwestern Championship Contest".. .. difficult to emblazon all that on a trophy. The "Dallas Rounders" I think, kept it alive some time ago, and DMAA has run the contest for twenty+years.

I moved to Oklahoma City in June and have been working a contract job for the FAA.  Hopefully in the next year or two, that contract job will land me a class date to becoming an air traffic controller.

Oh. Last night, your location was Daytona Beach, FL, so that was a sudden move! I was thinking that with the hurricane and all, either flying or driving would have been a dodgy deal.

I still can visualize OKC from when we had a flat tire on the way West from TN or AL. It isn't a good vision...pumping donkeys, sand, hot, sun, and nothing else. Maybe Route 66? That was over 6 decades ago. I hope it's nicer now. Steve

I am happy to report that after a year and half of suffering with some pretty severe leg pain from spinal stenosis that my cortical steroid injection in the spine has been a resounding success.  99% of the pain in the legs is gone and I can fly now without fear of falling down.  The neurosurgeon said I may only get up to a year of relief, but it is sure better than having them cut on my back.  Happy days are here again.

I'm really happy for you, Alan! I got shot in the neck some years ago...it helped some. Interesting getting the needle while under the machine. Can't recall what the machine was, X-ray or something else. The Novocaine they mix in is wonderful stuff, but don't overdo...let the cortisone work its magic.  Steve

I'd go flying, but nobody ever calls. And I have a gate key card and know how to get both in and out at Auburn Muni. Turns out it's easier to get in than out...a dumbass design, IMO.    Steve

This was a great contest. The weather was so nice.  It was not the usual 103+ we get around this time of year.  Low 90s with a straight south wind is a welcome change. As usual the DMAA put on an outstanding show.  The food was outstanding. To me the food makes it all worth it.  Talking tuned pipes with Frank Williams and eating BBQ with onions and pickles is just a great time!!!

Mark Troutman was on hand and having fun as usual.  Al Rabe came by and dropped off a salad and put his Big Mustang on display.  I think it was the Millennium Mustang. Matt Colan with his SV-11 stormed into town and made it known he was on the scene with some real strong flying.  We were glad to have him come down.  Hopefully he will be back. We had a young beginner as well, Sepied, he flys very well and has the CL bug for sure. He and his dad are always at our contests.

Matt flew really well and I think he took the win due to his consistency around the 45 degrees. The first half of his pattern was spot on the 45 degree mark.  He really took advantage of the single maneuvers and scored really well from what I saw.  Very nice flying Matt.

Joe Gilbert and Richard Oliver also flew very well. The flying this weekend was some of the best I have seen in a while. It was fun to be a part of it.

I flew Bob's plane from 2003.  It is awesome.  Very light at 58 oz and this is a full sized GeoBolt wing and Bob's numbers the rest of the way through.  I think the word that best describes it is effortless.  It just sort of flips though the corners and carves through the rounds just like a good stunt plane should but this one does it with the ease of a small plane.  It's a real nice blend.  It has taught me a I have a long long long way to go in my stunt plane building skills.

I caught that. Bill might have gotten more notice if capitalized..."Depends", as in the Adult Diaper. Since the Auburn Airport Authorities took the Sani-Can away, they might be the way to "go"?    Steve
