Help finding a forked blade....
« on: January 31, 2007, 10:15:14 PM »
Anybody know if there is an Xacto or similar blade to this, that's actually sharp? I haven't used hinge slot cutting blades, but it doesn't look like these are ground to a fine edge. The company I work for is trying to find such a blade. It would be a big help, if there is a standard blade like this.  HB~> Steve

Steve, to my knowledge the blade you have was designed not for cutting at all but for piercing and digging out a slot in balsa for the easy instalation of hinges, which is why you find none honed sharply. See here:

You might contact X-acto who probably make the largest selection of blades to fit their handles and see if they might be able to supply what you need. Heck if there is a market for it they of all people should be able to see their way clear to supply the need.

I believe those blades came from DuBro as part of a hingeing kit.

My hinging kit came with several size forked blades to match the width and thickness of available hinges, centering jigs, and a #11 shaped blade (not sharpened) with a hook on the end to dig out the balsa between the pierceings.

I do not know of a blade shaped like that for cutting, sorry.

Off the wall, maybe . . .

Could you narrow the blades of a Great Plains Slot Machine to cut the width required?

what about something that would hold 2 #11 blades.
depending on directions of loads and forces it might be a simple thing--or not.
wouldnt need many holders as blades could be changed as often as nessary?
