Viking Fuel Tank Access/Hatch Mounting Ideas
« on: November 25, 2023, 04:52:46 AM »
Guys.  I am now at the point of figuring out my Viking fuel tank installation.
I want to have a removable hatch.  Looking for the best ways to do that.  I was thinking of the small magnets.
Any good suggestions on how to do this?
Just glad to be here

I used a short piece of 3/16" dowel at the rear into a hole in the ply former. Two screws in the front into triangular ply in each corner with blind nuts.

I made my tank as wide as the fuse because of the short tank space. The Viking was originally designed for ignition so did not need much tank space. Takes about half as much gasoline as alcohol fuel. I believe the magnets would work well also.

Dave,
I have used two small magnets into hard wood angle blocks with recess holes for guides (also could use the rear dowel as Jim suggested with the magnets up front). At the bottom I used a flat head screw for the magnet to lock onto. The screw allows you to do vertical position for a good hold. I used a small section of aluminum tube to line the hole for wear resistance.

Since this will be an IC hatch in the nose you are going to have to seal all of the open areas.  Just make sure that you use copper or aluminum tubing in the dowel and screw holes or a latch which will easily slide into the hole.  I use this one on my battery hatches along with very small magnets.

Good luck - Ken

It is an RC Canopy latch.

This is how I mount the removable hatch on my Viking.

Two screws hold it down - one just behind the engine and one at the rear.

It has worked perfectly for twenty eight years.

Since it needed almost an ounce of tailweight, I moved the engine (OK Super 60) back 7/8 inch.

As seen, there is still plenty of room for the tank (2 ounces), coil, batteries switch and condenser.
