Ooooh! I like it. I love the jet look, and that fin/rudder is really cool. I remember at the 68 Nats in Olathe, someone was flying an almost all white jet style stunter with a Fox 35. At the time I thought it was a great contradiction, but when it flew it made total sense as it had such a cool factor. Some things you just can't explain.

Very cool and definitely a top job.

Please take no offense here but as some constructive crititcism I'd suggest adding a solid black or dark colored border around the lettering on the wings to finish and tighten up those logos. Figure about an 1/8" in thickness all around each letter and number. A lot of people do lettering and/or numbers on wings as we see here, but they all end up looking unfinished without some sort of border. Just my opinion.

This was a weighty lesson learned

Sig lite coat goes over it good and is fuel resistant.

I'm speaking for Jim here, The colors may be Brodak, they may be something else, they even may be mixtures, but the top clear coats are either Randolph, or Certified clear.

The clear coats is all Certified dope. The engine is a PA51 with muffler rear exhaust. It`s been about 45 years since Jim built a real stunt ship and a great job he did. A lot of out of town folks thinks Jim mainly flies speed. But that`s only out of state contest. He does how ever flies stunt ever week end when we go flying.Now that he will get pretty points I think you`ll see Jim much further up the latter at stunt contest.He is a very good pilot. OH, did I mention the plane is very pretty too.

Jimmy is one of the great gentlemen of our model plane family. Surprised he use colors in the paint. Of course Old Time doesn't get appearance points does it Jim.. That is ne beautiful plane he has done there.

Thanks all for the comments. You might have noticed that John mispelled my last name. It is spelled with all the letters, Rhoades. One would think that Mark Scarborough would like the t-shirt as it has his beautiful Avenger on the front. Yes it will be at the N W Regionals and VSC as well as Whittier Narrows contests if all goes well.

Currently the model will get the leadout wires wrapped probably today the 13th of Feb. The next few days will be spent rubbing it out then I can install the hinges permanently in the main framework and install the tank and vent tubes etc. I'm having some eye surgery done this month which has slowed progress but first flights could be as soon as this weekend if weather permits. That is a big if as it is still winter here and we havent done any C/L flying for months now. Hopefully I can get some flights on it before going to VSC. At any rate I plan to be there about a week early to trim it out and get to know it pretty well. It will be nice to get some pretty points added to my score. It won't be front row but not far behind.

By the way the base color is silver made from paste used to make silver dope for full size aircraft with about 6 teaspoons of Brodak Miami Blue mixed in about a quart and a half of the silver dope. The clear dope for this mix as well as the clear top coats are Certified Butyrate Dope.

I had surgery on my right eye last Tuesday. It went well. The left eye will be done at VSC time. It hurts that I will have to miss VSC again since I built 2 airplanes for it, but vision is more important.

I wish you well with you surgery.

The russian model that I flew was not a KA-10, although it is from the same design school. The model was built by Russian champ Evgevny Yakovlev and I bought it from him at the 2008 World Champs in Valladolid, Spain. Unfortunately I am not still flying it as a rather unusual thing happened at the Meat and Meet contest in Woodland CA several years ago. I noticed a slight bit of runout at the spinner tip on my first official flight but assumed it to be just the usual rough vibration of the Discovery Retro 60 when rich. After the flight I could not detect any looseness in the engine mounts and forgot about it and flew my second flight. At about a 45degree angle to the bottom of the last loop of the clover I felt a jerk and the model fluttered to ghe ground. The nose from in front of the wing spar attachment went straight into the ground although I didn't see it as I was tracking where the model should be going.
A crack had developed from the canopy down to the front of the wing carry through and down the inboard side of the fuselage. This caused the vibration I had seen but was hidden by the wing. During the flights the crack continued across the bottom and up the outboard side and off the nose came in the clover.
The ship is certainly repairable with the main part being a new forward fuselage half starting where it bolts to the back half of the fuselage. The repair will also entail stripping the wing covering as it was covered with a clear film and painted. This had some previous damage from a tape dispenser falling on it. I have no idea what paint system is on the model and it will probably require stripping also. This I hope will be done some time in the future when other projects allow.

Hi Jim,

I would suggest finding a product called "Dad's Stripper" at Wal Mart or similar. It is the best paint stripper I have ever tried on models.

Jerry Worth had his Apterix at the 68 Olathe Nats. I am not sure what powerplant it had but here it is. I think he should have recieved an award for the matching tool box best of show.
