I have just been informed of a problem with the last batch of backplates. If you have a backplate please check the crankshaft for clearance before using the backplate. If you need a new one contact me at m14m21 at bellsouth dot net One was installed and galled up.

I had that problem with 2 that I ordered. The fix was easy: just some sanding with 320 on a glass plate. Had to repeat a couple times to get what seemed like good crankshaft run-out. It really isn't worth the time and effort to return them.

Keep in mind there is a thrust washer between the drive washer and crankcase. Double check to see if it's installed, especially if it's a 2nd hand engine.

Washer or no. If the crank rubs on the backplate, you will get poor runs and black goo coming out of the exhaust. The OS steel washer is mainly for those who use an electric starter (I don't)

Curtis, what is the correct step dimension from the mounting ears to the pilot of the backplate? Perhaps we could measure our own prior to installing.

I only have about 25 backplates that are wrong out there. I will measure the distance and let you know. It looks as if the parting tool got changed and did not repeat. I will ship new ones to anybody who has problems.
