On my front stoop, early this AM (Jan. 20 2011)
--by 8:00 it had warmed up to -21.
-
Well you can keep those temps up there. Does remind me of when my sister-in-law lived by Hinckly Minnesota. The wife was talking to her and happened to mention we were now up to 15F. My sister-in-law replied, "It's that warm, only -19F here this afternoon". That is why I want to go south. Going to crossing duty after a day off for the snow flurry of about 8 inches it was only 8F. H^^
-
Feel for you!
It's been so hot out here in SOCAL I've been wearing shorts. City of Lake Elsinore had an all time record high of 87° this week. Little chilly in the AM gets down to the high 30s. LL~
-
Gee, we are having a heat wave. 43° right now. Of course, it's pounding rain (prediction is for 4" today) and humidity up around 91%. Oh, and flooding. There are a half dozen rivers that are supposed to finally crest today, so that's positive. Suppose to actually see the sun for a bit tomorrow. No blue holes today though.
But at least it's not -whatever

Sorry Ray but with those temps I would have to pack my planes and fly south forever!
-
Paul,
When I lived in Idaho and flew with Pat Johnston, we had many days we flew at the local fairgrounds parking lot when it was well below zero and we had to scrap ice off the takeoff pad. Starting engines was fun.
I don't miss those days. The weather man is promising (like he tells the truth) 49° tomorrow and partly sunny with no rain. I may even get to fly. Woohooo!

Got any snow?

-
Snow? Oh, yeah...it's an adventure getting out of my driveway because you can't see over the mounds of snow.
-
WOW , i don't see how you guys deal with that. it was 27 here {ga.}this morning i thought that was chilly LL~
-
It's supposed to get that cold Saturday and Sunday night. >:(
-
Well, it's rained non-stop all day. Not heavy, just a consistent drizzle. And not all that cold (about 48° now). But very high humidity and it sure feels cold. Sigh... I looked at the temps in Tucson - 70° and clear.
-
Well, at Columbus Park the last several mornings here in Tucson, to be comfortable in the morning, before 0900, a light jacket helped. By 1000, it has been in the upper 60s, by noon, in the low 70's. Almost dead calm air. What breeze there has been is a slight drift, away from the sun. Essentially a totally blue sky.
-
The only good thing about this weather, and winter in general, is that you can some building done without feeling guilty about not flying. It was 20 below here when I got up for work this morning. It's a comfy 65 degrees tonite in the shop though.
-
Seeing that Thermometer just reminded me once more why I packed the house, wife and kids and moved from Minneapolis MN to Orlando FL almost 15 years ago. Just wish I could spend more time ther - darn JOB thing keeps me away too much.
Mpls was actually south for me- grew up in the real cold part- Grand Forks ND, Theif River Falls MN, and a stint in Bozeman MT ( which is actually quite a bit warmer the ND most the time). Heck even Anchorage and Fairbanks Alaska are warmer than the very Upper Midwest a lot of days in the winter!
Don't miss that cold winter stuff a bit - and if anyone is ever around Orlando - drop me a line, if I'm available I can usually find a place to fly- and I have loaner planes that you can use without fear - they have all been crashed already and repaired- so not a worry if you stick one in the ground.
-
Minus 2* here in West Virginia tonight!
-
I don't mind a bit of dry and cold weather. Snow is OK too, but this winter we have more than usual.
I hate being rained on. Watching it on TV is the closest I ever want to be to a hurricane or earth quake :P

Colder'n a well-diggers hiney here! D>K

Big snow accumulation here. 30 inches in two weeks and -8 degrees at present.

Don't know how (or why) you guys do it...Might have something to do with work, families; y'know small stuff like that! Me, I need my palm trees and Bougainvillea.

Well our little snow flurry which cost me a days work was about 8 inches in the yard and drive. Temps in single digits in AM and 20'sF in afternoon. Thinking about February when the north sends the sub zero temps.. Finally bought new pair of boots to keep the toes warm and they work. #^

To reply colder'n a well digger's hiney. be a well driller my hiney is nice warm by the coal stove building airplanes :) #^

January 22, 2011...Pete Peterson, Mike Haverly, and myself met at TMF in Sumner, WA (SE of Seattle about 30 miles) and had a nice day of flying. Very slight breeze most of the day. Broken clouds burned off and general golden orb conditions prevailed. I checked the truck's thermometer about mid-session, and it was reading 51 deg. F.
Sweatshirts were fine. T-shirts only if you're from Kodiak, AK. To some extent, it is what you get used to.
My daughter called from Boston, and reported 7 deg. F and lots of sneaux. Anybody know a mid-30's stunt flier in that area that would like to meet her? She's cute, got a BA, a Masters in Edu and I think a Teaching Certif. for MA. Bonus points if you'd like to relocate to the PNW or at least West of the Rockies. I'm motivated by the hope of grandkids... y1 Steve

My wife loves her bougainvilleas, but I curse those flesh shredding, shirt tearing demon plants! The boy stays about 3' away from them when he mows the lawn- so I end up trimming around them with the line trimmer. The line trimmer may be a 2 stroke - but it sure doesn't sound anywhere near as good as a model airplane engine.
-
-29 degrees this morning when I got up to go to school only to find out there was a 2 hour delay.
-
For the free flight guys, this is probably the best time of the year here: there is enough open space for a proper flight on the frozen lakes.

John none taken. Have not heard that saying for awhile and I'm still by the stove

Hey Matt,
I feel your pain! I went to college in northern NY and January was always -20's F or so. Worst was my sophomore year when it hit -50 F.
The TV news is making all sorts of noise about it being around 0 F or negative single digits around Boston. Let me know when it is really cold!
-Chris
-
This morning in Millinocket it was -15 with a wind chill of -37. Better days are coming. Good building weather.
-
Here in So. Cal. Larry Renger and I went flying yesterday, mid 70's light wind, nice day all in all. Watched the two football games yesterday, and it looked real cold...

Andy,
You should be extra careful with those kind of temperatures and layer up appropriately.
One layer of sunscreen and a t-shirt should do it.

Hey Chris,
Today it was COLD! Right now it's -1 and it's 3:34, so yes, it's been very cold over the past day.
-
Hey Matt,
I spent three years stationed at NAS Quonset Point - by the end of winter the snow was piled so high we could only see the radome on a Super Connie while it taxied down the runway! I feel your pain! Northwest Ohio has been around 2 or 3 deg. in the AM with highs around 9 and 10 but at least the snow has never been over 5 inches.
Building season for sure!

I went to college in Idaho. Where we were at, regular daytime temp in January werein the -10 to -30 range with a couple of feet of snow on the ground. I grew up in California and never thought I would own a down parka and still freeze my back side off. The cheery, rainy Puget Sound was much better than that.
Today we have your standard Puget Sound January day: Overcast with rain then drizzle then mist then rain. About 45° with a breeze out of the south. This will continue with only brief breaks until March. Joy!
Sorry I couldn't make it to TMF yesterday. I had the joy of watching a horse show.
-
"cheery, rainy"
I don't see how people can put those two words into the same sentence :P

The great thing about Seattle weather is that you can look out the window any day of the year and think "Hmmm. Must be November."
February frequently has nice weather, actually. In about '81, I finished my side gate/fence in blistering sunshine, wearing a T-shirt...December 28th. It was getting a mite nippy by the time I finished, but the sun was going down, so that would be the case in June, too. Last Saturday was pretty nice, at 51F. with sun. It gives us hope that there will be Summer, eventually. H^^ Steve
PS: Sorry about the horse show, Randy...

I suspected it might be H^^
I have spent a few years of my life in warm climates too. You get used to different temperatures but the switch from one climate to another is always a bit of a shock.
... I never got friends with the kind of horizontal rain we had in Lebanon, Croatia and Albania ...
-
Jeff Foxworthy says that Ohio certainly has four seasons -they are: Almost winter; winter; still winter; and road construction. LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~
-
Well, as Steve Helmick is fond of saying, we have two season in Puget Sound: Winter and August.
Are folks in the northeast dug out yet? Sounded like they got pasted yesterday. Snow measured in feet.
-
hey Ty,
We missed each other by 5 years in RI. (Left in 62) But I certainly will never forget the amount of white stuff each and every winter during my three years there! I was always thankful all the barracks were connected together and with the chow hall so we didn't starve during those times!

Yup, we got a foot of snow in the Boston area overnight. My snow blower made short work of it.

This is the weather report for this Sunday in Miami.

Supposed to get Snow in Arkansas again on Tuesday....this after several days in the high 50s/low 60s! I;ve been plowing the garden....watch out Zuriel...here we go again! LL~
-
We are lucky in that we can complain about the snow. I rather have snow than rain this time of year. Especiallly when the temps decide to go below freezing. Another thing I wonder if Queensland Australia would trade the rain for snow? Hope they are recovering. On the Barton site was a report of a hobby shop completely washed out and probably will not reopen. Also as I told the teacher today, this 40+F temps are making me sweat. Got new boots so feet don't get cold when temp is down aroung zero F. H^^
-
I need to replace the heavy coat I used at the KOI. They simply don't sell them in Miami. The cleaners refused to clean my old one.

Quote by Ty - "Hi Will. I was there from Aug 65 through April 70. Served on two tin cans."
I was across the bay on the old Essex. The old girl was not too far from retirement as I now understand it. (It was time!)
-
78* doesn't really make me think there's snow on the way.....I have the garden plowed, thinkin bout puttin taters in the ground! ::)
-
From late 59 through 62 the only two out of Quonset were the Randolph and the Essex. We did operate with the Wasp occasionally, but I'm not sure where she was based. Both the Randy and us were CVS designated and flew S2F Grummans, along with the AW squadron's AD5W's at that time.
I googled the Essex and found they have a new one operating, but it isn't a full-fledged carrier as such. I found that interesting, to say the least.

Quote Ty - "ugly as home made sin,"
Yeh, they were that, but what power hogs - both types could be airborne by the time they flew over the forward elevator on a deck launch. I'm still amazed at that!

Speaking of B-R-R-R-R-R-R-R... Friday and Saturday we were in the 70's, now they are predicting 6 to 12 inches of ice/snow for tomorrow and temps that won't get above freezing till next Saturday. This morning moved my diesel tractor into the shop so it would be easy to start should I need it for snow removal. Filled up the generator, filled up the gas/diesel cans, filled up and parked my van under the carport where I normally keep the tractor. If we must get out at least the van won't be under ice and snow.
In the past when I was this prepaired nothing happened and it ended up being a big waste of time. Sure hope I wasted the morning :)

You know when you pull up the field web-cam and see this you can rule out any plans on flying anytime soon. ;D

Yup...you got that right.....It's pouring rain here...and I mean pouring! H^^
-
Shockingly, it's sunny today here. Cold at 20° and humidity at around 65%, but clear. Forecast is for partly cloudy for the next two days (we are between storms at the moment), then the next front comes in and we get soaked for the weekend. Sigh...
Hey, it could be much worse. I could be in Chicago today. Sounds like a couple of feet of snow and high winds. Joy!
-
Enjoy your sunshine. The moisture you let get past is now hitting us. Have already shoveled 6 inches of snow and now I am back from the store with another 4 inches on the drive. Computor says it was 3F. I was sweating with a shirt jacket on that has a hood. Amazing how many people forgot how to drive in this stuff. No lights on ltheir vehicle either. I just waved at a guy that passed me like it was summer time. He was sitting up on one of the snow banks spinning his wheels. Did get some more dope on the planes yesterday and was planning on more today. Think I will stay in the house, especially tomorrow as they say we are supposed to be minus 15F in the AM.
-
It's snowing right now for us, and it's only going to get worse. School was already canceled for tomorrow, the snow is going to get that bad. Am I complaining? NOOOO #^ #^

You may not be complaining now but wait till that week off you usually get this time of year. They already cancelled it here.

This is our 2nd snow day this year, and we're allowed 5 before we have to make up the days, so we're safe right now.

Take a look at this picture I found this morning. It just shows how huge this winter storm is!! :o
-
Hi.
Yesterday morning was so nice that I took 1/2 days off from work and went to trim my new planes (yeah, I know, not CL but..). I started at 8am, it was dead calm and -12C / 10,4F, couldn't be better! L
-
..between flights, I had to remove some ice from l.e's!
-
It was an excellent morning, best flight was 6 min 8 sec which is about at limit for my ultra-long plane at minimal thermal activity.
-
Great!
I should have brought my skates to that scene...
Tomorrow +10 C here... :(
By the way, how's life nowadays, Lauri?
Bruno
-
Hi Bruno!
Yeah, I know you Dutch people have this perversion towards ice-scating. I learned to hate it allready at primary school.
Our lake (Lac de Joux) is great for skaters, kind of 8 sq.km skate rink-and 30 metres deep! The skaters tend to kill my towlines-that's why I usually go early in the morning.
Life is fine. Relaxed.
Will we meet again in Poland? L
-
That ice must be thick. I remember in my teenage years having to chop a hole in the frozen farm pond the the cows could drink. My Brother Howard would come down and bring his skates. Would you beleive it was 11 degrees. Same either F or C. I will learn this temp thing yet especially when those down under talk about 20C being too hot. By the way did I say that looks like it would be a great control line site. H^^
-
That ice ice is 4-6" thick. After 2" it's quite safe.
-
You mean WA has a whole month of summer?
OR has only 2 weeks of summer. No fair!

I feel a lot more empathy with you guys, today...
After very nice weather - sky, wind and temps - for the SW Regionals at Tucson last weekend, the tail of the beast lashed us, too.
I'm in Sierra Vista, AZ, about 50,000 population, 5000' altitude, 70 miles SE from Tucson - yesterday we set a record for all-time lowest recorded temperature: 3°F (with 10-20 MPH East wind.) That's why the geography and population lesson. About 4500 homes lost natural gas service; dozens, if not hundreds had water pipes burst, or at least freeze up; a few local schools are set up as "temporary warming centers." Nearby Bisbee and Tombstone doing similarly. Well, it just topped 32°F - first time in about 40 hours.
Tucson didn't get hit quite as bad, but for this southwest desert Sunbelt area, near the Mexican border, it is a trifle unusual! I didn't move to Arizona for this! I settled here BECAUSE of this.
Ah, well, we'll have about a hundred days touching over 100° in Tucson this Summer. Things balance out. Yah, right...!
-
By the way did I say that looks like it would be a great control line site. H^^
At least if you have studded shoes or something else to keep you from slipping too much.
The lakes here probably have half a meter of snow on them ... and at the moment there's pretty sure to be water between the snow and the ice. Quite OK if you have skis or snow shoes.
