After DC540 ..... Iron Armor Primer Filler from Harbor Freight was a good substitute, and inexpensive too ...... Now it appears that this has been discontinued also.  bummer.
What is the next best primer / filler?

   I really like it, and if you are careful, it works great over solid surfaces. I would be at least a bit hesitant to put it over open bays with silkspan, you need to sand the primer pretty heavily.

Yes, I've used KK primer ..... It seems to be  just a bit harder to sand than the old K&B, but still good
The DC540 types were just so easy to sand, and the Iron Armor was really cheap.

I hear you but the DC540 was full of talc and somewhat heavy, that's why it disintegrated and powdered off so easy when you sanded it, which you definitely needed to do to get the weight back off. It was very good, don't get me wrong, but a good sanding was a given, you wouldn't want to just lay on a coat and go to color. (with any filler primer for that matter)

I used the KlassKote White primer a lot and it works out to be a weight saving device if you are going to paint a white base coat, it covers really well. Sure, it's technically a metal primer, but so what... at least your plane won't rust. LOL! It sands great for sheeted foam and bonds well, providing a great blocking coat or base for a bright color. IE: If you are painting a bright red airplane, the KK White makes a dandy primer that you can shoot your red right over, unlike a gray primer which would force you to shoot white then red to get the color bright as you want, etc.

YMMV but I got to the point where it was my go-to primer.

I can tell you one to stay away from! I was looking for a white version of DC540, and I figured "DC" could have stood for Duplicolor, so I bought a can of Duplicolor automotive series sandable white primer, DAP1689. It didn't have enough solids, it didn't feel completely dry after several days, even with some time in my hot car sitting in the sun, and didn't sand without gumming up the paper after only a few swipes. Fortunately, the plane was covered in glass cloth and epoxy, so I washed it all off with acetone and paper towels. Definitely two thumbs down!

 Every time I've ever used a Duplicolor product it's sucked. Thankfully I've never shot it on a model airplane.

That has been my experience with DC as well....terrible stuff.

This works very well - from Autozone as I recall.
