Avoided Disaster Today....Learning from Previous Mistakes))))
« on: October 11, 2014, 03:12:23 PM »
Was out doing my last trims and practice before the Carolina Criterium Contest and was checking my lines, clips, handle and lo and behold.....had a huge fray in the handle cable. Luckily I had an extra handle so switched out. Will get this one re-cabled.
So the lesson I learned from my Mustang crash saved me today as I flew the Plan B. Always pre-flight)))))
Whew.
Wow.
Yeah!

Ditch the cable handles and go to a hard point style. You'll like them better anyway.

Yup, what Clint sez, I've (finally) changed out almost all of my handles to hard point versions this season. y1

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I have a hard point on my Prowler but that red handle came with a plane (Mustang) that was gifted to me.
Still on handle experimentation....a win for the hard point so it seems.
Time to be even more vigilant!

I guess my day is coming.  All the years I have been flying and competing never had a cable handle have that happen.   Might check where the cable comes thru the handle, might be a sharp edge.   Yes hard points are great handles, but I still test fly with cable handles for the easy adjustment.

From the look of the picture the handle has been modified as there seems to be two additional bolts running through the front plate. The front plate contains two smooth brass circles which spread the cable apart and over which the cable runs. By adding the two extra bolts I strongly suspect that the threads in these bolts are what is causing the unusual wear on the cable. Remove them and the problem should go away.

I'll have to ask the feller who gave it to me if it came that way.....good call.
