Avanti II . by Robert Baron anybody know this plane
« on: December 09, 2007, 08:15:44 PM »
I am considering building the Avanti II  by Robert Baron.. from plans i've found on the net... does anyone have comments about this design or has anyone built it, flown it.. ???   Im guessing but it appears to be similar to the stiletto...  Thanks...

D>K  Might check with Tom Dixon in the Atlanta area. I think that he and Bob Baron flew together some years ago...

Bob lived with Jim Renkar, PAMPA membership guy, for a while while undergoing treatment...Jim is a great source of information.

My two cents would be to avoid the Avanti like the plague, but thats just my opinion.  I could be wrong.....

I don't know if it's the in line configuration or some other aerodynamic quirk about the design, but both of my Avantis (The Tom Dixon plans for the Avanti 50 and Avanti 60) had handling and trim issues that contributed greately to their major crashes that left both planes obliterated.

It might be noteworthy to consider that Baron won the Nats with a Patternmaster, not an Avanti.

For exhaustive information on the Avanti, check out the "Stabs and the Avanti for Ted" thread in the stunt design section.

The Avanti II is much, much different than the Avanti 50 and Avanti 60.  They share the same name, but apart from that, they're nothing alike.

The Avanti II is the plane that won the 1981 Team Trials.  Relatively thin wing, thick stab/thin elevator.

Flying Models still has the plans for it: it's in the February 1982 issue.

It's also the exact design that Jim Casale based his 1983 and 1985 Nats winners around.
