Avanti II by bob Baron
« on: December 23, 2010, 03:43:53 PM »
The Avanti II, IMHO is one of the prettiest models designed in years.
But despite the pretty lines, I dont heard so much about this design in our forum.
I remember also, if Im not wrong, that it was one of the first models to start the trend in using, the "then" new schneurle .40 llike the OS 40 FSR.
anyone is still using this models? any picture?
I know that this design is the work of the great pilot and modeller Bob Baron.
thanks in advance

Try this thread on for size.  It will keep you reading for hours.  The comments by Ted, Brett and Randy in the beginning of the thread are important...

If you need plans, I drew them some years ago.  Also have iterations in slightly smaller packages for those wanting a 600-610 inch plane.  The plans show a foam wing, but I can project ribs or you can simply use the root an tip rib and shape the rest between the two.  Lots of different techniques.  I really should be able to make most any size version you would like.  Can cut laser ribs, too.

Ty,
I'm not sure exactly what Tom is putting out, but I did do the plans some years ago, now.  Next week I'll send you PDF files on this and the TM to keep you up to what I have.

My Avanti 60 is aging on the rack like a fine wine, awaiting NOS30 eligibility. I figure it'll be eligible quicker than the time it would take me to build something new anyways...  LL~

Actually, I'm looking forward to flying it again with a fresh perspective. Maybe I'll have some new idea's about how to make it into a world beater... it was never a "bad" flying plane, but it did suffer some in-line quirks. The wierdest thing was that the trim seemed VERY speed sensitive. I think this is because the wing turbulated the stab/elev airflow more at some speeds than others. I can't remember for certain, but I want to say that level flight was not good below 5.2 laps, but at 5.3 to 5.5 it was stellar.

I am running a header muffler on a PA61 in mine, and was using pitch and a lot of break... I found going to one of my pipe props (4.25 pitch) and a flatter run yielded MUCH improved flight charecteristics. Steady speed & line tension is your friend on this design.

It tended to over rotate insides I think... it may benefit from double checking the engine for upthrust, and/or drooping the elevators a bit. It would also get a little squrielly in the OH8's. I think it's a little too slippery for it's own good, side area wise? A piped version with the deeper fuse for a tunnel might help..., and jacking the stab an inch... but then it wouldn't be an Avanti any more.

Here's a couple pic's in it's original config the first day I flew it... it now sports a better muffler (that stay's on) and a carbon 3 blade prop.
