Any Clubs in Denver?
« on: January 24, 2017, 08:48:06 PM »
Looks like more than a 50% chance that I might be taking a job in Denver, I always flew on private property here but wondered if there is any control line activity out there. Thanks for any info, the AMA website didn't show much on that.

The Arvada associated modelers have a circle, and seem to be somewhat active.    Otherwise, most of us fly rogue in CO!  lol

This club in Denver seems to be pretty active.

I still get this newsletter forwarded to me - there doesn't seem to be any real contact info in it, but they are AMA Club #790, and the email address is contained in this header:

Might look up Jack Pitcher. He flies with a club in Colorado Springs (I think).

They fly at a space on the old Lowery base and sometimes at the Coliseum.

The Arvada Associated Modelers (an AMA Gold Leader Club) have a large flying site on the west side of the Denver Metro area.  We have one circle with a smooth geotextile fabric surface, two RC runways (one concrete paved and one with geotextile fabric), helicopter pads, and a dirt car track.  There are two large pavilions at each of the rc fields, and we will be constructing a smaller one at the control line circle this spring. We hope to expand the control line facilities more in the near future.  Just Google "Arvada Associated Modelers" to find the web site.  Notice we have a weather station you can check on line before you bother to load the planes and drive to the site.  We have an active group of regular control line flyers that fly often and some of the rc flyers join us for the annual Ringmaster Fly-a-thon each October.  If you come to Denver send me a "personal message" (PM) on this site and we can coordinate meeting at the flying site.

Jerry, that's fantastic info, I fly both RC and control line, but there are RC fields everywhere so I always worry about having a place to fly in circles.

Rich, not sure yet on the exact area of town, the job is at Centennial airport.

That would be Parker, on the south end of the metro area.  My son is there.

I learned to fly RC at Cherry creek res. which is overflown by Centennial on the final approach.  No CL there though.   Funny, the reason I asked about specific location is that many call the entire metro area Denver.  It is quite large, and there are many smaller cities around the area.   I am about an hour north of Denver.  I can tell you the RMA club is essentially dead, with no official flying site.   I made it down and flew at the Arvada field for the Ringmaster fly a thon, and it was a lot of fun.  That seems to be the place to be right now.    Good luck with the job.  Denver is a great place.

Troy,  Centennial airport is about 35 minutes from the Arvada Assoc Modeler's field (mostly interstate highway).  There are a lot of good places to live along C-470 half way between the airport and the flying field.  I fly both RC and CL stunt too.  That is how I decided to join the Arvada club.  I live in Golden, which is at the base of the Front Range and only 11 miles from the flying site. I drive down to Highlands Ranch (not far from Centennial airport) to see my grand kids often.  It's an easy drive except at 5 to 6 PM.

Guys you are all exemplary as always. Although I have never lived out there my wife grew up in cherry hills and I'm pretty familiar with Colorado in general. As far as looking for a place I'm in a bit of $ticker $hock as far as real estate goes but as long as I'm within an hour or so of the airport I'm happy so not too picky there.

Got the job. Probably be a few months before I'm moved, spooled up, and have some free time but good to see a real modeling community in the area.
