At the field with Otto
« on: March 04, 2016, 03:04:35 PM »

OK,   ALLAN Perret and I flew our Ottos today at the field.  This video is of ALLAN flying his.  They both flew a whole lot better than we expected, that is until the rotor blades on mine decided to detach themselves from the fuselage.  These things have no tendency to glide at all.  The rotors spun to the ground unscathed but the fuselage did not fare so well.  They are so much fun I think I am going to put on a Gyro Combat contest...just think about 2 or 3of these things with crepe paper streamers fighting each other...hey this might be a new event at the NATS....lol....

We need one of these at SMALL.
Are you using a throttle?

Hi Dan, neither one of us were using throttles on these but ALLAN and some of the other guys in the club are planning to use throttles.  Allan had a .25 on his and I had a OS 35 on mine and both of them had plenty of power.

There was video taken of mine flying and the *gasp* Crash but it has not been uploaded yet.  These things are an absolute blast to fly and I still cannot believe how good they do fly.

Man, I wish our club had a flying circle like that. Otto looks like fun too.
Narrowly averting disaster since 1964!

Wayne we are vey fortunate .  We have two circles , a 60' one and a 70' one.  They were poured in the 60s.  We maintain the grounds and patch the circles as they crack.

Added throttle control to the Otto Gyro.  Built from Mike Griffin's kit, power is FP-25, weight 30.5oz, on .012" x 58' lines .   Has 8° rotor incidence per original design.  Planing to make a new 4° rotor based on Bill Darkow's recommendation and performance of the Baby Ringmaster Gyro [Pat King kit] which has a 4° rotor, see video of that animal in the 1/2A section.

Mike!! Too much "Shine" or did the Louisiana sun get to you?
Seriously, looks like a lot of fun, very tempting!!
Spent two years down there at Ft.Polk, La. 551st MP Co.(Long gone) 1963-65.
Did plenty of flying once I got used to the change in climate for the engines from Michigan but with aircraft with WINGS!
Again, looks like fun, Christmas is coming. Hint to dear wifey!!
