    The poem was written by an American flying with the RAF during WW-2, John G. Magee and is well known. A local TV station where I live used to play this right before playing the Star Spangled Banner and signing off for the night. Remember when TV stations did that and put up a test pattern after signing off?

Oskar Bosch flew a glider routine to this poem at airshows when I was a kid. Saw it many times. I had forgotten he was a Luftwaffe Ace. He shot down quite a few of our boys.  https://www.worldwars.com/story-of-oskar-bosch-former-luftwaffe-ace-with-18-victories/

When the poem was written in Europe I'm sure John Magee was aware who German flying ace Adolph Galand was because of his record of kills and toll he was taking on American and British pilots. The highly decorated pilot and Luffwaft General who died in 1996 was interviewed by an EAA member writing a book on German Aces. A friend of mine shook the authors hand that shook Gland's who had shaken Hitlers hand on many occasions. Galand also began his flying experience as a glider pilot as did Oskar Bosch.
