Ares photo's Wanted
« on: August 10, 2010, 09:20:36 PM »
Gday guys.

Im starting prep on my latest classic stunter a werwage Ares with lite weight Stalker for power.

Id love to get some inspiration for paint scheme's and would like to see some photo's of others - this is my first Ares and would
like to do something (paint wise) that pays homage to the design.

Show me what you have got.

I should really post photo's of where' its at in the build, I just finished buffing out the clear of a 1951 nobler with Veco .29 that looks stunning!

Thanks for that,
I guess thats more what I was looking for that "a-typical" werwage style colour scheme.

The top picture is basically a carbon copy of Billy's '62 Ares, just a different *green* used.  Billy's is a light metallic green.

The white plane is very close to Billy's original '59 Ares, just flip flopped.  Billy's was dark blue as a base color with white and red accents.

Yes .. the rumors are true.

It is going to be the .61, Its time for a new classic model and I dont think you can power it with anything less .. can you?

You'll have to tell us how you shoehorn it into that cowl .
Any chance of a few pictures of the Nobler engine bay ?

Yes An Aero Tiger is what is in most ALL of Billy's Classic ships now, and they are perfect for them, they weigh 7.9 ounces and put out ...more ,smoother, usable power, than the ST 46s that came out of them  , according to Billy.
Remember you still have to maintain a weight balance with the power plant

Hi Randy.
I know a bunch of people run that aerotiger, and ive heard good things about it for the weight.

As I mentioned, the .61 is the lite weight edition, so I have never have a problem with balance, ( not telling the master about engines.. ) but being rear exhaust the overall weight distibution is staggered backa little further. I have a friend who takes maths WAY to seriously, he calculated that the central point of weight was X with the stalker + lite rear muffler in relation to the airframe, and an OS .35 with normal side muffler the weight was Y being with the mass of that weight was closer to the front ,he calculated the weight differential for adding tailweight was only .5g + or - .2g for a given balance point. This surprised me, but factually it worked out to be the case. - I guess when I was running the Stalker .61 in my 1951 classic nobler, 3 open nats classic stunt wins is hard to argue against.

"how to shoehorn it in"
The ares according to the plan runs a shaft extension, this was not required with the .61 , Once I get some more detail in the engine bay ( As yet I havent shaped the cowl inlet.

I am planning on attending the 2011 US Nats, for expert aerobatics - having done it in 2004, Im looking forward to coming and if the ares works out as good as I hope - I will look into the feasibility of building one for your Classic stunt also..We would need some information about when its on, what the rules are ect.. but I must admit having a 2011 US Classic title win on the resume is tempting :)

Hi PJ,

The mustache is optional.  Billy didn't wear one to win at VSC several times. ;D  And he didn't have one when he won the '59 NATS! LL~

Hi PJ

Couple of other things to consider is that a 60 typically uses a larger prop than a 35...more weight, and it normally needs a bigger fuel tank....more weight, and it normally needs more fuel....more weight. The Ares, as all planes of that size are weight critical in the frontend, and the last thing they want is added tail weight to make up for the frontend.
It will be very interesting to see your 60 powered Ares  and  I look forward to seeing you again.
I hope you do get to make our NATs, I enjoyed teh visit last time :-)

Regards
Randy

Thanks for that Randy.

I do completely agree with you in regards to prop size ect, extra fuel, the only consession we seemed to make was pushing the tank a little further back into the wing. I will be the 1st to admit, I have never run this combination in the ares' so It might not be as dominate as the Nobler was. however, looking at the weight and the numbers they seem to be similar for weight transferance.
I have found success with running between 11 - 11.75 in dia but no larger. those older designed never "popped" into a courner like a modern ship does so I dont find it as critical running larger prop size.

I can tell you the one thing I have found ,the torque roll of the engine caused some airframe issues, and resulted in lots of stress fractures across the frame. ( OVER A period of 4 years )

I have let 3 others fly it to date and all reports have said its the most unique combination they have flown and was really surpised as to its performance.

I am really REALLY trying hard to organise getting out to the 2011 Nats, at this stage its looking good and its high on my 2011 priority list.  I made SO MANY friends, ( you included ) and would like nothing more than to compete and show you all how it works. I was unprepared for the 04 Nats being my 1st international trip organisation it was all a bit overwhelming. Plus crashign my model 6 weeks out didnt help !

Thanks for all your thanks and support guys. All the photos. ect.

Hi Paul,

I know Charlie very well, but I haven't been around Jim much.  The most time I spent with Jim (and Louis) was at the Atlanta meet a couple years ago when I burned down the ST 46 in my Spacehound.  Jim was very nice and so was Louis.  Wish I saw then both more.

There are three different Ares plans available, as most know.  The '59, '62 and Super Ares, each one bigger.  The green one shown is the '62 Ares, a touch bigger than his Walker Trophy winning '59 Model (Brodak kit).

There was also the Ambroid kit which was basically a '58 Ares according to Billy.
