Are you aware of our weekly Stunthangar Video Hangouts?
« on: October 26, 2020, 04:44:18 PM »
What:  Our Stunthangar Video Hangouts (SVH) are fun, informative, and engaging.  SVH is a video conference call with real time conversations about your favorite topics like flying, flight trimming, building, sport flying, and competition.  The Stunthangar Video Hangouts are not like this forum because we see each other face to face and are very cordial, warm, friendly, amiable, and polite. We also encourage live demonstrations of tips and tricks.

When: Every Monday and Friday evenings starting at 6:45 pm PST until 9:00 pm or later sometimes.

Where: You can find the link to get into the live conversation at “At the Bench” link below “In Memory of our friends” link. Only registered members can see "At the Bench".  Please use a webcam and microphone so we can hear and see you. If you would rather watch and listen you can view SVH on Sparky’s YouTube channel called “Stunthangar”.

The video Chats are Awesome, There are many experts in the CL activity that often join the chat and can share invaluable information and tips for CL. You all know Bob Hunt?, one of the Icons in CL stunt well he is a frequent participant of our weekly chats. At any rate if you  have questions, or interest in CL you need to join our video discussions. All you need is a smart phone or a PC with at least a microphone to participate or you can go to the Youtube live stream and ask questions via the text chat feed. But anyway you do it just participate, just like the election the more participants the better the dialog. CL is what most consider "Old School" model aviation. Old School like many venues is becoming more and more popular so spread the vibe. Heck Vinyl is making a comeback with the new generation..... catch the wave and share the enthusiasm, we can make this thrive.

Today is Friday and tonight should be really good.  Last Monday topics were King Orange contest results and pictures from the event.  Just a reminder to not miss the Stunthangar Video Hangout tonight starting at 6:45pm (PST).

Hi Charles and the other guys, I really enjoyed the hangout I popped in to. That was a rare occasion all my kids were gone for a while so I found half an evening free. Just wanted to mention that so nobody thinks I was annoyed (too much :).

I'm in a phase of taking everything hanging up in the garage and trying to work out the old bugs before starting something new, which has too often been my tendency.

On a high note, I finally got a header for my 46vf in my new Junar and got the first two flights on it and what a difference a modern"ish" PA plane makes.

So locally, our club does this one night a week in the winter. We have used google hangouts,  tried zoom a few times but went back to google.  Our more senior members have technology issues,  and google seems to work pretty easy.

1) What platform do you use?

2) Have any issues with too many talking or bad people dropping in?

Hi David,

It was great to have you pop into our Stunthangar  Video Hangout.  I hope you pop in again someday.  Glad you got your header for your 46VF and was able to fly your new Junar.   You should have some success with that new Junar on a pipe.  The advance class in California is going to be the wild wild west with likes of you with your new setup.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for commenting on this thread. I am using 8x8 and in order for people to come into our meetings they need the link which is posted inside "At the bench".  So far no problems to report. Dave if you have chance please join us Mondays and Friday evenings 6:45pm (pst).

All you need is a PC with a webcam, just about every laptop made in the past 5 years has one built in. How about a tablet? Unfortunately it does not work so well on smart phones, the screens too small and navigating the forum is a pain. We would like very much to have some more experts come and visit. Hear that Ted? How about it Brett? And Randy are you listening?? Bob comes and joins us from time to time. If you are reading this come on in, I have it on good information that Rusty is thinking of haunting you guys until you just stop in every once in a while. :) ;D ;D :o :o ;D ;D >:D >:D y1 y1 ;D

First of all for those of you who went to “At the Bench” last Friday night and couldn’t find the link I am sorry for the inconvenience and frustration that might have cause.   I mistakenly thought I had already post it.

I was informed of my misstep and posted it and then we had a wonderful time.

We had a great discussion about:

•   The “Magician” model airplane
•   3D printing of parts
•   Making cowls out of 1 liter plastic soda bottles
•   Mike Londke showed his inordinate acquisition of contest grade balsa recently acquired. ( Enough to make most of us jealous!)

Join us tonight for Stunthangar Video Hangout at 6:45pm (PST) at posted link inside “At the Bench”

Well Monday is rapidly approaching................yes the dreaded beginning of another work week what's worse in nearly every corner of the country it is cold, snowy, miserable. Well seeing as how most of you are cooped up in the house trying to figure out how you are going to bludgeon out that warp you seem to have inserted into your wing, stab, private part, why not join our gang of unruly CL enthusiasts in our biweekly video hangout. It is on every Friday and Monday evening. Just go to the At the Bench thread to get the link to the video gathering. Heck if you have a warped private part you can keep the camera off and just do the audio thing. All it tk=takes is a PC with at least a microphone which by the way just about every laptop, tablet made in the last 5 years has. We may talk about all sorts of stuff, so long as it pretty much pertains to model airplanes. Although I have to admit there are times we veer off topic into car, motorcycle, home improvement, warped parts discussions but we try to keep it on topic. So sit back grab a beer, scotch, joint, or other inspiration of choice and join in. See you there.

We did have our hangout and for those who participated I created a computer wall paper you can use should you wish. This is a quick and dirty render of a A10 in flight. In the future these will be only available on the "At the bench Thread" and will feature different airplanes.

All sorts of topics are discussed, from designing models in cad to how to monokote a profile fuse without the chance of fuel creep delaminating and screwing with your airplane. At least check out the threads in the At the bench thread to get the latest PC wall paper released for the session.

A followup to last nights (12/21) video hangout on Jim's (Bob Hunt's?) technique of filling and prepping balsa with finishing resin only. Jim asked if anyone was using this technique. I've been using a similar technique on the solid wood components of my rubber scale builds using cyano instead of finishing resin. It's a huge time saver; no waiting 24 hours for curing, it sands easily and is less expensive than resin. The steps are the same; flow the glue on and wipe it off with a paper towel. You have to work fast with one swipe of the towel. The idea, as Jim mentioned, is to keep the layers minimal so you avoid sanding layers off. All thats required is to knock the high points off and keep going until the grain is filled. The Hughs H-1 cowl is 1/4" sq. balsa strips and there isn't a hint of them after the glue and sand process.

I'm practicing the technique on a larger scale on the fuselage of a Herr Aquastar, to then use on a Golden State Spitfire 1/2A stunter. I'm using a layer of .005" silkspan (OOO?) to see how it works and for waterproofing. I've tried it wet and dry and it seems wet isn't necessary. I iron the wrinkles out of the piece of silkspan, fog a thin layer of spray adhesive on it and stick it down. Perhaps it's unnecessay, but I applied a couple applications of cyano to the wood before attaching the paper. Works well on flat and slightly curved surfaces. I'd go with straight glue on the curved areas.

Critical is to keep a fan running right next to you to blow the cyano fumes away.

Thank you Ara,

I  am going to try the CA technique on my current build "Precious Balsa" a modified Strega. Thank you for watching SVH last night.  You should have been at the after party when I stop streaming the show.  Sometimes the after party is better the streamed programing.

I’d use caution with the cya method of prepping the substrate.  This was first used in the early 90s using thin CA to apply fiberglass cloth to nose sections and even entire airplanes (no open bays, of course). It was a quick and easy way to seal and strengthen the wood prior to paint.  However, the CA would continue to gas off long after the final finish was applied resulting in bubbles in the paint.  I used this technique to Fiberglas the nose of a Magnum.  I then finished the airplane with clear dope, dope based filler and K&B Superpoxy.  Several weeks after the paint was complete bubbles formed under the paint only over the fiberglassed nose.  The rest of the finish remained unblemished for years.   If I recall correctly, others had the same issue with dope finishes.

Also the CA is very heavy.  I use the Hunt Z-Poxy technique with great success.  Adds a little surface hardness and reduces the amount of dope that soaks into the wood. A net weight benefit

Hi Charles Carter, This evening I stumbled on to your Stunthanger chat and really enjoyed myself! I haven't been much of a You Tube attendee save for WWII and other History oriented presentations! Once we get over the Christmas Bill deluge I'll seriously consider subscribing but for now I'll be content to observe! It appears to me that this could be the best thing next to stunthanger itself since Control Line World ceased publication!

Tally Ho!

It is once again Monday and tonight there is going to be a Stunthangar Video Hangout.  Please join us for another evening of fun.  I will post the link at "At the Bench" approximately 6:45pm (PST).

Among other things I showed ow to modify a standard Brodak bell crank to a captive lead out style instead of the traditional through the bell crank holes style.

I have enjoyed tuning in to the forum twice now. I gave a Thumbs Up last night and will join the chat discussion when I have something to offer or a question to ask. Thanks!

I checked in pretty late last Monday, having accidentally noticed a thread referring to the virtual meetings. Thanks for the really nice welcome! It's not always the case that groups like this are so open to newbies. Often, with this kind of group there is a lot of "Clique-ishness"...with the group not interested in anyone beneath their level of knowledge and expertise. But not so in this case: you guys are clearly Gurus, but I was made to feel welcome and was encouraged to share. THANKS!!!  I'll be back!

Sorry I didn’t stay longer. I was having connectivity issues with my phone. I’ll be back again with the iPad or computer. Nice to meet everyone. I’ll be back.
