Title: Appearance Judging at the NATS
Post by: RC Storick on July 18, 2016, 06:48:02 PM: Appearance Judging was done by Jim Lynch-Charles Reeves and myself. My team and I judged 61 airplanes in under 1 hour. I believe a record as far as time goes. Everyone was pleased by not having to wait an extra hour or two after the pilots meeting. I heard no complaints so I guess we got it right or at least close. Point spread was 19 to 12 there was not a 20 pointer.

I have some pictures I will post then I get home but if you have some please post them here.

Thanks to all for letting my team and I judge your airplanes.

All time the highest I know was 15, unless there was one this year. I think that that is shared by Allen Brickhaus and myself. I could be wrong, of course, and I only know for sure from 1993 on. It wouldn't surprise me too much if Bill Fitzgerald or Gary McClellan beat that back in the 70's or 80's. Bill was a real master of the stuff, and his Gypsy still looks like a very good dope job.

I have seen some really good monokote airplanes that I would probably have given very high scores to over the years. Some of the really good ones were RC planes, actually. In some ways it's a less forgiving finish than dope or epoxy, since there is absolutely no way to fix any defects once you make a mistake. With paint you can always fix it with sandpaper, filler, and more paint. With Monokote, you remove it, fix any underlying issues that removing it might cause, then try again basically from scratch.

I have had absolutely no luck with the "new" Monokote, and I really wouldn't know what covering I would use as an alternative.

Post by: RC Storick on July 22, 2016, 07:53:11 PM: I saw the highest scoring Monokote airplane that I judged at the field today and he said I gave it 14. So I was off by 2 points in my estimate. Not to say I would not give one maximum points if done right. I just have no seen one. Louis Rankin does the best I have seen.

I don't think so. Not by the judges anyway. You can make a very nice iron on covering. It has limitations if you are going for some finer things that you can accomplish by other means - and things that the judges are supposed to look for in the top contenders.

How I did it in 1 hour was pre-grading them as they came through the door and placing them in a approx row where they would end up. I was very close and we had to move around 5 planes after the first placing. Jim- Charlie and I after I had placed them walked up and down the rows for any mistakes I had made.

After placing the planes the the rows we awarded points by rows. I did not feel there was a 20 pointer so we started at 19 points and moved back. I placed no predetermined number on any plane. We just let the chips fall where they may. I heard no complaints so I was happy with the job my team and I did.
