Anyone Offering Laser-cut Ribs for Skyray 35?
« on: May 30, 2008, 07:53:59 AM »
Did a search and came up lacking but was wondering who offers laser-cut balsa ribs for the Skyray 35?

I think all of agree the Skyray is an amazingly versatile sport aircraft which has the endorsement of many top-level PA flyers, namely Mr. Buck, especially after substituting a balsa constructed wing in lieu of the stock lite-ply and spruce wing.

Too bad I just thought of this today since Mr. Skyray himself, i.e., Mike Pratt, has been a regular guest at our last few club meetings.

Yes, I know I could easily cut my own ribs or even try to find/order the Skyray ARF but I have several stock Skyray kits lying around begging for some attention.

Speaking about the SR ARF, anyone have one yet?

Tom Morris has cut ribs for the Sky Ray in the past.  They are not laser-cut and they are not exact size replacements for the kit.  Tom's ribs are furnished with a leading edge and training edge and the necessary blocks for Tom's "Lincoln Log" wing building method.

If you have never built a wing using the "Lincoln Log" method, you are in for a treat.  I have never had a wing go together so incredibly quickly and still be so straight.  Tom does good work.  I think you can contact him at

ctmorris at cableone dot net

If you find a source who is laser cutting Sky Ray ribs, plese post it here.  I like lots of options.

When I built my Skyray 35 I used balsa ribs as Brett had posted. I found that I had a *load of templates.  ;D

It's REALLY easy to make a stack of balsa ribs for the Skyray or any design with a straight wing.  Rough cut the ribs from a sheet, pin them together in a stack, and carve them down closer with a razor plane.  Finish them up with 100 grit sandpaper.  Cut the spar slots and leading edge notch with a razor saw... It only takes about 15 minutes for a set, with no burned edges.

Steve;

The Skyray is a great design.

But, no one has answered your question.

I have converted the Skyray rib into CAD.  That is easy.  As the Skyray wing is constant chord, that keeps it easy.

To have it cut by someone with a laser cutter, all you really need is to have a .dxf file of the rib.  They can do the rest.

If that is what you need, send me an email and I will be only too happy to send you the file containing the Skyray rib.  Mote - what others have said here is true - it is an simple rib to cut by hand.  But, if you want laser, that is easy as well....
