Anyone know the ST .56?
« on: April 03, 2020, 04:12:33 AM »
Hi All,

A friend of mine has an old ST .56 R/C in good condition and he was wondering if this would be good for stunt seeing that it was produced at the same time as the .46 and .60 engines? I would appreciate some info if anyone out there knows this engine. Thanks.

I flew one of them for a long time. Always dependable in terms of starting. The St.60 is the same case and I did a back to back comparison on the same plane I was flying. I was flying a fairly large and heavy profile, I noted the ST .60 is more powerful. My plane flew better using the .60 but the .56 would've sufficed if I didn't have so many repairs on the plane. I have noticed that some of the V case .60's were offered with muffler provisions, my engine like yours didn't have them. I used a very light tube muffler with a hose clamp on mine. I don't recall what venturi I used due to never needing to look at it. I just used a 6 oz. plastic clunk tank and flew . It's a pleasure to use.

Thanks for the info Kenneth.
I have two of them , one of which I just got from Randy Smith through a friend of mine.
According to Randy they are a good running engine.

I am planning to try it out in an SV11 ARF and see how it works.

The main reason I’m going this route is that I got both engines really cheap and I am not anyway near being a competitive flyer yet and feel that I can upgrade to a more modern engine later if need be.

It’s interesting that there are several for sale on ebay lately and yet most people are not even aware of it’s existence.

          Hi Keith:

My flying Mate is using one on a Tudor II and it can not get any better,  We launch the the engine turning 9300 rpm. with a 12x5 prop.  This provides a great 424 flight! and perfect lap time.  Try it, you will like

There were at least four versions of the .56 that I know off. Like the .46 there is a thin and thick sleeve version and one version with double rings.
Last is the very light version with no Ball Bearings. The seldom seen non BB version is a great OTS motor for Viking's ,Super Duper Zilch.

We flew a Score with a ST 56 for a couple seasons. Wonderful combination! Wish I still had both!  Consistent runs, great  starter, easy on plugs and props. Nice stunt engine!

I think John Wright knows a lot about them.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Has anyone any experience with the two ring version of the ST56?

I recently acquired a used one on Ebay and have yet to run it. Looking at the old engine tests on scepreflight there are some comments about the early versions running a bit lumpy and harshly which appears to have been corrected subsequently.

I also picked up an St60 with two rings that appears to have had little running and am hoping that this will be usable for a Magnum which needs finishing..  ..eventually.

Thanks in advance from Nottingham - Robin Hood country..

One thing not mentioned yet is most of the 56’s have sub port timing. They do not like stub mufflers but run strong on tube mufflers. The 60 does not have this set up. All bb versions run pretty much the same.

A interesting ST 56.

I bought this at a swap meet around 25 years ago.
New, $15.00
Neat thing is, it's a plain bearing version.
I also have a plain bearing ST 51.

When I run the 56, I'll post some info.

Thanks for all the info on theses engines!
Please keep the goodies coming.
I’m really looking forward to running mine.
One is a two ring version and the other is I don’t know, it’s the one from Randy so it’s gotta be good.

The silencer info is especially good in that I was just going to make tongue mufflers. This gives me incentive to adapt other options.

Cheers

P.s. I have always loved the performance and easy operation of my other Supertigres.

Nice to read this information. I have a NIB RC ST 56 that I was considering using in a future project. EddyR mentioned muffler issue. All I have are tongue mufflers. Anybody want to part with a fitting tube muffler?

Thanks, Matt
