Anyone ever use these glow plugs?
« on: January 05, 2015, 09:37:02 AM »
I wasn't sure whether to post this in OTS or engine setup but here goes (moderator - please move it if necessary)

While cleaning out my shop, I came across this box of NOS Arden plugs.
I was wondering if any of you has had any experience with them.

Yes, this, and the replaceable element type Arden. They are very hot. This is the only plug that worked in my dad's Ohlssen 23 sideport converted to glow using conventional glow fuel. With any of the others I tried, it would quit when I disconnected the battery.

It also worked with common plugs and 40% nitro, but there was a different problem with that arrangement. It involved the cylinder being forcibly ejected from the engine.

They are very neat and I have one courtesy of De Hill. I also have some of the old Champion glow plugs. Looking through my old Air Trails those were used a lot in stunt engines back in the 50's at the Nationals. I have never tried one as they are not compatible with my glow battery connector. I may have to rig up a couple of mini gator clips to try one in my Fox 35. They do seem to take a lot of battery to make them glow well. Any of you guys have experience with them?

Hi Bob,

As a kid I actually used some of ther Arden plugs as a kid.  I used them in McCoy Red Heads.  My buddy's Dad had them, he had been flying back in the '40s and he started us flying.

We used 2 door bell batteries in series for power and alligator clips for hook up.  They heated up real good with those batteries.  I would use them today!

I do use a couple of the old Champion plugs in the sandcast Foxes.  They work just fine.  I remember seeing pictures of Bob Lampione's Sabre with the Fox .35 and Vic Macaluso's Crusader and Fox .35 both having Champion plugs.   Like was said, the old NATS write ups stated the Arden plugs were used in Fox .35s.

A while back I did some testing on my original OK Cub.  This was THE FIRST commercial .049 and had a quite long stroke.  I found to my surprise the 1949 Cub used a long, not a short plug. OK was not making their own plugs when this engine came out; it was developed with an Arden plug and maybe Arden didn't even have their short plug ready for OK to play with when the Cub was designed.

I ran the engine on 3 different props, a 5" dia. red Kaysun, a 6x3 Cox gray, and a 7x3.5 Cox gray. I used Sig Champion 25% nitro fuel.

the old 1949 Cub ran best with the 1949 Arden long plug it was designed for!

 CUB Long OK Plug 13,800 9,600 5,800
 CUB Long Arden Plug 14,100 10,000 8,000
