Title: Anyone else see this on a APC
Post by: Paul Taylor on November 20, 2024, 01:44:34 PM
Was doing a little maintenance on the daily flyer and found this. Small cracks in the deep turn of the prop on both sides.
It’s going to be a paint stir stick now.

Kinda loose prop spinner banging? or spinner cutouts to tight?

You have to make sure you don't have any spinner/prop contact or force the spinner on, even on an electric model. I try to leave plenty of daylight between the slot and front and back of the prop. I usually make the back of the slot bigger and leave the front alone to have something consistent  to measure off of to help spinner balance. Make sure no contact at the face of the prop either. depending on the motor, battery and model weight, i have to wonder sometimes if using a regular I/C prop might be better safety wise??
   Type at you later,

I’ll double check the gap when I pull it back out.

Thanks guys.

Hi Paul,

I believe what your are experiencing is "flexing" of the 2-blade ACP electric prop in flight and the prop is making contact with your spinner. It happens during turns, especially hard turns such as square maneuvers and the hourglass. On my first electric profile, I could actually hear the flexing in the maneuvers. I ended up changing to a Xoar electric wood prop and the issue was resolved. Hope this helps.

I do hear the prop flexing but will make sure I have enough clearance.

It does sound kind of cool. 😎

What does a prop flexing sound like? Don't believe I have ever heard it and don't understand how you can hear it? Thanks for info on that one

It's a soft buzzy sound when you turn a hard corner. You can hear it because electric is quiet.

Though it may sound cool, from what I've been told, prop flexing is hard of the motor bearings and can cause premature bearing failure. I've also been told that a flexing prop is less efficient. When I switched to the Xoar electric wood prop, it was like night and day. My remaining battery capacity increased and and the plane accelerated better through and out of a corner. But beware, you may need to lower the rpm because my lap times were too fast with the wood prop.

But of course, it's your choice.

Totally makes sense.
I have flown the Xoar and might have to try it again.
