The scary part is, these things must work on some level, otherwise they would not exist.

'Tis the season----for scams.  And yes, the scams work.   After all the warnings, enough people will fall for one of these scams to make them worth the effort.

At this time of year, people are more likely to be generous and therefore fall victim to a phony charity.  I get calls all the time from charities I never heard of.  Or, people figure someone is feeling generous and willing to hand out large sums of money.  For a small fee, of course, to offset administrative costs.

I did not get anything like the ones you listed.  Normally, I get the phone calls about my Amazon account showing a recent purchase of iPhones and I need to verify these purchases.  Or, my computer being hacked and they will help fix it, or my Medicare or Social Security was hacked and I need to talk to an agent to clear it up.

The scammers can be clever.  Sometimes my caller ID will show a local number.  Once, a CVS pharmacy number and another time the caller ID showed a local bank.

On one of these calls, I responded by saying  "U. S. Marshal's office."  Immediate click.

There are people that go out of their way to mess with these scam artists. A simple google search of 419 eater makes for some very entertaining reading from those that make these scam artists lives miserable. The letters section is fun reading.

I'd still like to know how caller ID shoes my number???

Using voice over IP (VOIP).....they can spoof any number they want.
I stopped all that with my Iphone by turning on "Silence Unknown Callers".
Works great.
The phone does not ring unless the caller is already a known caller in the phonebook (in the Iphone).
The reason they spoof your own number is because usually folks list their own number in their phone.
I removed my own number from the Iphone phone contact list so they can't bug me.
If a legit call comes in they can still leave a voice mail and you can call them back.
