Aircraft Spruce doesn't have much in the way of Certifed dope. A color chart, but no color butyrate. Does anyone else carry Certified butyrate color dope?
-
Wicks Aircraft carries Randolph dopes, both nitrate and butyrate.

Hi Scott,
Certified dope is no longer available. See the thread on this topic at: https://stunthanger.com/smf/paint-and-finishing/certified-dope-availability/msg658953/#msg658953 (https://stunthanger.com/smf/paint-and-finishing/certified-dope-availability/msg658953/#msg658953)

Oh-oh. Now I'm in trouble. Anyone have some Certified silver butyrate they can sell me?
Thanks!
-
Scott,
As long as it is Butyrate dope you could use Brodak silver or even Sig silver will all work. I think the dope from Wicks is Randolph and I think it is the same as Certified for our purpose. Do use the Brodak or Randolph thinner. I had some Certified 1690 clear that is water clear and the Randolph 1690 is the same.

It will not be long before we are unable to get any of these products. With demand shrinking, there is no reason to produce them. There is no profit in it.
I need to find an alternative to dope. One member at the flying field is using, I think, Minwax or something similar as a base, then auto colors and clear. He has all the experience and safety equipment for the auto finish products. I do not have that equipment so I stick with dope as long as I can get it.

I hope you are right. Fabric covered full size aircraft are still out there, of course, but I also see that as a shrinking market.
And, with the EPA in charge of things, I fear that one day they will simply ban all such products, due to the "environmental hazards" they present. Or, the formulations will be forced to change so that the products become worthless to us.

To some degree we are adapting by using some of the water based paints with the 2K clear coat. I have used paint from Liquitex in rattle cans, it covers well and seems about the same weight as dope. For clear coats I've us Max 2K and Diamond Clear Coat. Both work well over the Liquitex.

Regarding the Diamond Clear Coat--are you using the aerosol cans or are you spraying it thru your own gun?
Do you prefer the Max 2K or the Diamond Clear Coat? Any advantage to either one?
I would like to get more fuel protection. Plain dope is not good enough for that. I have looked at both the 2K or Diamond Clear Coat. I have not used either one yet.
-
Jim,
For total fuel protection for high nitro fuels the Max 2K. For normal <15% the Diamond Clear in spray can works fine. One thing with the diamond clear, it is moisture cured, so you need to have the part being sprayed at the same temperature as the environment you are spraying in. I had some trouble taking a ship from inside at 74 degrees to outside at 92 degrees and high humidity, it can crinkle. If you let the ship sit and get up to temperature it is fine. Do light coats, heavy coats run.

I have some Certified dope and it always worked well but I went to the Wicks site and the fine print says that Randolph MAY not be compatible with Certified. I guess I'll have to try the Walmart thinner and see if it is compatible.
I expect it will work ok for our purposes as the warning really applied to full scale aircraft.
-
Is there a Certified website anymore? I am unable to find it. I guess they have shut it down.
The last time I was on that site, well over a year ago, I remember a warning about mixing different brands. The site recommended using only Certified thinner for Certified products. Other brands of thinner might cause problems with Certified dopes. The warning mentioned only thinner, as far as I can remember. Nothing was said about applying one brand over another, as long as the proper thinner was used for each.

I never had too much of an issue using Sig and Randolph dope together. Actually I'm still using some Sig colors with Randolph clear over and under. I used Certified clear for a while with mostly satisfactory results except; I only used the clear-never tried the colors mostly because they were priced much higher than the rest. The Certified clear covered QUICKLY. It had much more cellulose filler than the others. Sounds great but it built weight in a hurry. I had to learn to use the minimum of it to avoid the weight. It covered very well and seemed very fuel resistant BUT it never really etched and adhered well to the dope underneath. If you need to repair any cosmetic work you would find this clear would peel off like plastic food wrap. I think that tells me it used a different solvent than the others. I never got into Brodak much. Unlike the others it would give me an immediate headache which I can only attribute to yet another solvent unlike the others. In every case I have used Kleen Strip laquer thinner with nothing but good results.
