THEY...who ever "THEY" are???
Say that DRINKING THE BREW OF CHAMPIONS while practice flying stunt is NOT A GOOD THANG'!! ~^

However I can remember the daze days at Delta Park in the summmmmmmaaaatime...how a few of my good ol' flying buds...would take along a 6 pack or more.... of cold beer and share the hopps between those hot summer practice flights. (I always managed to bring along a few bottles of Root Beer for folks like Matheny or Dunlop for our tea tottin-toddlers. VD~
Not only did it seem to smooooooooooooooth out the nerves a tad....it also seem to bring out either the worst or honest best stunt flying in us.
Plus we could ALWAYS BLAME THE BOOZE....if we happened to crash or fly those "less than stellar patterns?" LL~

HEY LEO......Is their any posted "park-rules" that would hinder that practice today?
Bye the way...YESTERDAY my beloved daughter brought me a six pack of this really tasty brew (see attached photo) that just may replace my beloved Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaainerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Beeeeeeeeeeeeeer...which was my brew of choice in the old DELTA-DAWN-DAZE GONE BYE FOREVER!!!

Not a survey....BUT WHAT BREW DO YOU THINK IS THE NEW "BREW OF CHAMPIONS?"

Well, Donaldo, since I became diabetic, I can no longer partake of ANY *brewskis*!  So, it is a moot point for me............

But, I will admit, an ice cold beverage of choice was a great thing in the 110+ heat indexes of our summers!  And it never seemed to affect us in any way.....

I do remember a very proficient pilot who was a part of some aerospace company in Seattle sharing a Rolling Rock out of his cooler at one NATS during a rain delay in the early '90s.

Shultzie,
My first question is how come I did not see you at Delta park when I was out there a few weeks ago. I would have liked to have met you.  H^^

And to answer your question. I prefer A&W, but Barq's has a good bite. (Rootbeer that is)

College, Physics Club end of the year picnic, theme was bring something that flies.  Lots of food and cold malted beverages.

Kites, boomerangs, Frisbees, a spudgun, huge water rockets.  I brought an Ringmaster.  Flew it late in the day when the wind fell off.  Not a real good idea, but only the ringmaster was injured....  ::)

From what I have read, alcohol degrades your sense of timing and your judgment.  It has no effect on strength or endurance.  I find that if I have one beer, I can tell that my flying of the pattern is degraded.  Alcohol does make one feel better, and masks discomfort, tiredness, etc.  I have been in situations where by about 3 PM I was tired, hot, wet, dirty, and bug-bit, and really dragging.  I'd chug down a couple of brews and become bright-eyed and bushy tailed and keep on working until dark.

Club I belonged to where brews flowed freely lost a prime flying site because of it.  I don't think anyone should drink while flying, and I would not encourage any alcohol on the flying field.  (Although I have been known to drink a beer at days end.)

I never drank when I flew. A good example of this is the time I stopped at the Vet's Club on the way to a tennis match. The guy I was playing against served the first ball. I swang at it and completly missed it and it hit and broke my glasses. I have never drank at a sporting event from then on but used to have a few beers during a pool game to settle the nerves but no one was throwing anything at you. If I had too many the game skills would completly dissapear. I saved most of the drinking for afterwords. When I played Mushball in the 70's our team got the sportsmanship trophy because we always lost and had to buy the keg of beer after the game. As far as Portland Parks now I do not believe Boooooze is allowed. I have settled into being a Pepsi Attic. In those years I do not think i ever saw you drink. or anyone else that flew models at the time. Gene and Tim would never drink or smoke anything and that is probably why they passed on before me. But we did have a lot of fun despite the fact we Were pure as gold! LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ HB~>

Don,

At our R/C flying field we never drank before (or during) a flying session, but often took cold beer to the field for refreshment during the post flight bull sessions.  010!

We also had a snack bar that was manned most of the time during the summer. Hot dogs, hamburgers, beer, and BS, were a great way to end the flying day.

My current favorite brew is Widmar's Drop Top Ale, made right here in Portland. I think it's the best ale I've ever tasted! Right up there with Newcastle Brown, and other premium ales.

Never liked Rainier beer, though it tasted pretty good fresh from the tap at the Rainier brewery, the only time I went to a party there.

Drank a lot of Olympia beer, which was heavy on the hops. Tried it a few years ago when I found it on the shelves again, and there was no comparison to the original. Think it was made in Texas by Pearl or Lone Star, and was awful.

I don't drink while flying or fishing. I am hypoglycemic (high insulin production) and get blasted real easy, so I'm a cheap drunk.

My absolute favorite is Widmer Brothers Heffeweisen (no lemon!) on tap. I don't like it in the bottle very well. Mirror Pond (Deschuttes Brewing Co.) is pretty good. I'll have to try their Cindercone Red, I guess.  One of the worst beers I've had in years was Kokanee, the only bad Canadian beer I've tried...VERY DRY. Opposite of Coors and Lone Star/Pearl, which are very sweet. Ewwww. My favorite beer LABEL is St. Pauli Girl...ooh lala!  LL~ Steve

I've never consumed such beverages while flying. I have enough problems keeping the thing out of the ground. But while building, hmmm, now that's happened. Uh, regularly. Probably why I look in the shop the next day and say, what was I thinking!

Hey "Shultzie"

Listen up --- The Buffalo Theory

A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when a herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells, but naturally attacks the weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.
   And that my brother in balsa dust, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.  LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

There is only one beer to drink. It is made by the oldest brewing company in the country (1829) it's brewery is a national registry item. And it is 2 miles from my residence. Of course I'm talking about Yuengling beer. I usually drink Lager, Port or Chesterfield ale. This is real beer, not water and suger like most national brands.Light beer is for yuppies, most national brands are tooo sweet. Micro breweries are really making some very good beer

I dont drink and fly either. But a dark Ale that I found a few years back while camping at the Grand Canyon called"Arrogant Bast*rd"(7.2% alc.) has got to be the most amazing thing I ever consumed!
1-22oz bottle per night, fine the next day. <=

2-22oz bottles, questionable next day. ???

3-22 oz bottles or more, just forget about the next day, your not getting out of bed!lol  Z@@ZZZ

You may start out building a Nobler, but the next day a Flite Streak sits on your bench! LL~

Definitely not a beer for sissys, but can make one out of you if you let it! >:D

I seldom imbibe these days.  But there was one hot summer in So. Korea when I became addicted to OB beer (the local brew).  It came in quart (or liter) bottles, and just one would make all the cares of the world go away.

I was first exposed to Yuengling on a Brodak trip. We had dinner at some nice resturant in Uniontown. They didn't have Guinness so I asked the waiter to bring me what he thought would be a suitable replacement. I got to tell you it's a damn fine beer and I buy as much as I can when I'm in Penn. to take back home. For some unknown reason you can only buy the stuff in Penn. Which has the funniest beer laws I've ever seen. But they do make good beer.

BTW I tried to fly once after a few shots of Jagermeister. Not a good idea. :X

A sip of beer does seem to wash the balsa dust right on down, when building. I never seemed to drink too much while building, in years past. Maybe I need a small fridge for the shop?  y1 Steve

I would definitely NOT suggest drinking WHILE flying.  It isn't a good idea since it DOES hurt the reflexes, slow responses, etc., and physically speaking, will limit your ability to perform physical tasks.  Small amounts tend to calm the nerves since it is a sedative, pharmacologically speaking.

While you may not FEEL the effects, they are proven to occur.  And it affects fine motor control, perception, and coordination the quickest. (which is what 95% of CLPA is all about),

(I had the privilege (??) of teaching that to about 300 kids a day for several years in 9th grade health class!)

I'll chime in here.  Lately I have been liking Full Sail Brewing's Amber Ale.  Another good one that my friend Richard Entwhistle introduced me to is Negra Modelo.  It's great with Mexican food.

When at the field flying I usually opt for good old black coffee or water.

Back in 1971 my beverage of choice was Schmidt's (of Philadelphia).  The cans were gold and poppy red (1969 Dodge Charger color) - wonder where I got the idea for the scheme on my "Spirit of Philadelphia"?

I found out, as all kids will sooner or later, it is best to swill the suds last.  When the micro brews started to come in, it was a toss up between Anchor Steam and Sam Adams.  When I worked for the Germans and used to get over there a couple of times a year, I found there are many American micro brews as good as German brews and many excellent English brews.  My favorite is Samuel Smith's Winter Welcome (only around at Christmas), brewed since 1758 in the old brewery at Tadcaster.  Next are any number of the Hefe (never, never the filtered Club) Weitzens like Franziskaner and Paulaner.  Always in the fridge at home is Penn Pilsener, brewed right here in Pittsburgh.

If you get to Brodak's, try and find some Penn Pilsener (they brew other great beers, too).

I still enjoy a glass of German bier occasionally, at our favorite German restaurant.

Many years ago, I spent three years in Germany with the AF, on a steady diet of German and Dutch bier. The night we got back to the states, a friend and I went to the snack bar on base at McGuire AFB, and ordered hamburgers and a pitcher of draft. It was Milwaukee brewed Schlitz beer, and it tasted so darn good that we closed the place that night, after many more pitchers of Schlitz, and too little food!  010!

My friends mother called shortly after we returned to the barracks, and had apparently been calling all evening, anxious to talk to Ken. I tried to wake him, but couldn't get him to come to the phone! Told his mom that he was sick in bed (almost true), and she replied "you mean he's drunk, right?" Mothers always know....!  LL~

Ken is gone now, but we were stationed together for almost eight years at three different bases, and drank a lot of beer together. He always traveled with a large galvanized tub in the trunk of his car, filled with iced beer to drink while on the road. Imagine doing that today!

Yes...
Schlitzieeeeee' beer was the beer of the pro-la-teareeee-ut' and the masses of folks in those early daze.
According to my mother...my grandfather used to give me and my twin sister when we were mere babies "sips"of his Schlizzzzzzzzzzzzzz"- late at night to keep us quiet and sleeping  through the night!
Here is an old faded snapshot...taken just after Grand Paaa Joe..."spiked our baby bottles with that brew that "made not only Milwalkie famous...but was the choice of beer in the Ozark mountains of Arkansas.

Shultzie is the kid with his EYES POPPIN OUT...as I suckle my Schlitzeee' tainted baby brew.
The breakfast of future stunt flyers.. remember that this photo was taken with those old glass plate negs waaaaaaaay back in 1939 in Eureka Springs Arkansas.

The car folks don't want you to know, but I've read several times that for many people drinking one beer in the hour before driving improves many people's performance- a small amount of alcohol calms people down enough to more than offset the effect of slowing relexes.  Could work for you in stunt flying too.

I seldom imbibe these days.  But there was one hot summer in So. Korea when I became addicted to OB beer (the local brew).  It came in quart (or liter) bottles, and just one would make all the cares of the world go away.

Floyd in OR

OB and Crown were the 2 top brands in Korea in the 60's when I was there. The price was right too, 5 quarts for a buck. Not a bad beer either. It was said that OB's brewmeister was a repatriated korean who had lives in Germany

If you ever come to England, you must try Spitfire Ale!! Brewed in honour of that great aircraft.
Check out the Brewery advertising for this ale on  www.shepherdneame.co.uk/ and go to Spitfire advertising,
some of them should make you laugh as they are not PC and are aimed at the Germans! And I can almost see the brewery from where I'm sitting, the oldest brewery in the UK, 1698.
I play rock'n'roll in a 5 piece band, and if I drink before a gig, I have trouble remembering where I am in the song!!
Save all my beers for afterwards.

Cheers, might just have a beer now!!      Neville

Neville,

Great web site! Intrigued by the ads, I looked for a source for Spitfire Ale in this country, but apparently it hasn't made it to our shores?  HB~>

Fortunately, Oregon has a great number of excellent brews to keep me happy, and broke!  ;D

Cheers,

Bill,

Have you e-mailed the brewery, they may be able to tell you if its available in the USA !
Some of the press adverts were withdrawn because they were deemed too offensive, but I thought they were funny!
Typical ironic English humour! Spitfire ale is known as the Bottle of Britain !  get it ?

When I *could* imbibe, I started taking a liking to Killian's Red and Guiness Draft.  Before that it was PBR, Schlitz, Miller High Life, Bud, Reingold Chug a Mugs, and Rolling Rock.  I do REMEMBER having a beer................

Comments and sea stories (Now this ain't no s**t),

When I visited my daughter and family last summer in Vienna, we traveled to Munich to visit someone else. Somewhere along the way I saw a beer wagon with a sign that said they were formed in 1492. Anyone know which one that was?

Was in Milwaukee in 1965 while in the Navy. Went into a bar that served BIG drafts of Schlitz for fifteen cents... H^^

Most sailors drink Budweiser...you can get it anywhere.

In PA there was once a beer served only around holidays called "Old Frothing Slosh" or something like that. Their slogan was, "Beer so light the head is on the bottom". Is that still made?

Saint Pauli Girl is great stuff. My current taste is for Samuel Adams...preferably "Boston Lager", but I haven't tried them all. Actually, I never met a beer I didn't like!  ;D

Geo,

I thought the oldest German bier was Bavarian, but wasn't even close! This came up on Google.

http://www.totalbeveragesolution.com/weihenstephan/

My favorite German bier was Bischoff, and it's now imported by Beer Geek. It's made in a small German village near Sembach AB, and was very popular with most of the folks on base.

Though German bier is very good, I don't think it compares to our finest NW micro-brews. Portland OR is a beer lovers paradise!

Agree with you on Sam Adams, another great beer. My son-in-law went to school in Boston, and we drank a lot of Sam Adams while visiting them in Cambridge.

By the way, Sam Adams is the only US beer imported by the oldest brewery in England (mentioned by Neville). Says something about the quality I think.

Neville,

Would love to have seen those deleted Spitfire ads, although the ads they didn't delete are funny enough.  LL~

I'm a big fan of British pub ales, and much of it is available here at our better pubs.

Newcastle Brown Ale is great, but many of the pub ales are also excellent.

Spent a few days in Belfast Ireland many years ago, and fell in love with Guinness Stout. Still have a glass now and then, when I can find it fresh on tap.

My daughter brought me another sample of brew this weekend to tr...that her husband (a firefighter Captain) was given by one of his colleagues.
Its called "TRIPPEL"  (Belgian Style Ale (from Fort Collins, Co. USA

After sampling this brew....the only thing I can recommend is that it has a most beautifully attractive label. LL~ LL~

Was it WC Fields who said, " It was a woman that drove me to drink, and I didn't have the courtesy to thank her"

I was in my Local pub last night at a quiz evening, the pub is run by Shepherd Neame and is called the "Aviator" and it depicts aviation on the Isle of Sheppey (where I live) hundreds of photos from the late 1800's to the 1920's of all of the British aviation pioneers. The first aircraft factory in the world was just up the road, run by the Short Bros. Orville and Wilbur came here in 1909, C S Rolls ( of Rolls Royce) used to do gliding experiments from a hill up the road. the first pilots license (in England) was issued here, all British aviation history started a few miles from my house. And the Best Beer is made just across the river from there!!!
The word Fokker was used quite a lot in the deleted ads!! I'll leave the rest to your imagination!

Back in the day we used to go road tripping down to the Twin Cities for entertainment, one night someone brought some Lienenkugles Beer for refreshment. Too bad Root Beard doesn't imbibe- I'm sure the Cheese Head Flying Circus could introduce him to it. I've heard rumour that something changed, either gone or bought up by one of the big horse @#$% mass producers.

I have too many favorites, it depends on the season, temp, activity- but I do have a soft spot for an ice cold Grainbelt Premium Longneck, pulled from a wash tub of ice after a day of concrete pouring / wheat harvest / spud planting / -or any of a dozen ways to wreck your body while earning the money for beer I used to pursue.

I don't drink the stuff myself, but I had a friend who used to make home brew. He sent a sample in to the state to have it tested and it came back saying that his horse had sugar diabetes.
