Bought from California_Dan via Ebay. Should have been an Atom 09 crankcase. I have to decide if I can make the rest of the parts to complete an engine. Also, can anyone suggest what the thing under the crankcase is for? It looks like it opens a small hole into the crankcase. Is it a form of throttle? or possibly a shutoff?
I think that the case is Magnesium.

Probably a bleed valve for when you flood the c/case. There's at least one vintage engine with this feature, but blowed if I can remember the name. Someone will.

I believe that is a 1947 "Mite Diesel" 09 as shown on page 73 of my Andersons 4TH Edition Engine "Bible".
It has the venturi the same height as the top of the CC, four cylinder holes (same as yours), the valve at the bottom of the CC and the ring looking thing at the front of the CC.
Good luck finding parts for that one!
Cheers, Jerry
PS: The mounting holes look the same too.

I think Jerry got it. See the link: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1054975&page=426&highlight=mite#post27307525 (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1054975&page=426&highlight=mite#post27307525)

Thanks everyone.
Knowing the name makes searching soooo much easier<g>
So here is what I have found out:-
I think that it is indeed a Mite 0.099 (1.62cc) Diesel designed by one Howard Mandeville, and first introduced by Walt Schroeder's kit company, Eagle Mfg. Co. of Brooklyn around 1947.
I have found a lot more information on line and some pictures of the complete engine:-
Interestingly the Alan Ortof review calls the valve under the crankcase a "throttle Valve" where other reviews think that it is a drain valve for a flooded engine.

There was also a glow version:-

Is that magnesium?

The ad clearly states a "positive cut-off" feature. The valve can be opened to stop the engine.

The ad also clearly states that it can be also a throttle as it can progressively bleed off lower crankcase pressure long before stopping the engine.
(Perhaps an interesting addition to a stunt glow instead of using a bell crank activated exhaust throttle?)

Is that magnesium?
Yes it appears to be and looks as though the case has never been used.
I will probably make all the missing parts but it is not at the top of my do list for this year but I have had a quick model to test the feasability. Is there anyone out there who has one?
