This engine was made by one of the guys in the Brodak factory.

It looks like a Hot Air engine, Paul.  It is sort of kin to a steam engine except they use expanding hot air instead of steam.  They are fascinating to watch.

One of the most interesting uses for that type of engine was for fans from table size to floor standing models. They burned kerosene and were almost totally silent. The down side was that the burning kerosene of course added to the heat.

I believe this is a Stirling engine. they come in a wide variety of styles:

Why they have not yet installed it in a plane by now is a mystery to me!!!

Apparently it was all the rage then ! Std looking big free flight stuff.

What is the engine that's a sort of "reverse"-steam engine--that uses condensing steam in a sealed cylinder with a cold-water spray  to "suck" the piston down?  Or was it a "double" engine, using steam pressure on one side and condensed low pressure on the other?

When I was a kid of 9 or 10 (55 years ago) I treasured a book of my father's called "Things a boy can do" - from around 1910 to 1915 I guess? He was born in 1902.

They had a instructions and drawings on how to make a compressed air engine (and tank) for a model plane.

I really loved that book! Electric mnotors - all sorts of things with shim brass, steel wire etc. etc.
