Title: Any good web hosting sites out there?
Post by: Bob Reeves on February 10, 2012, 09:44:04 AM
Just found out that Intuit's Homestead web hosting service is dropping FTP support.. FTP is short for File Transfer Protocol and has been part of the web since it's inception. This is the way the Gluedobbers Web Cam images are uploaded to the web site. Without being able to send a file to the site unattended our web cam will quit working on March 1st when they turn off FTP.

I have a couple business sites with Homestead which I'm going to move when I can find another provider that supports FTP. I can't expect the club site to move but maybe I can host the web cam on my site with the new provider.

Any recommendations for a web site provider?

I've had good luck with both web.com and godaddy.com.

I can't speak of FTP as I use FrontPage. But I fear someday I'll be in the same boat as Microsoft dropped FrontPage a few years ago.

Bob, I have 6 websites hosted in ipower.com and one on 3essentials.com. All seem to work with ftp just fine since that is the only means I use to maintain them.

Bob,

I have several sites hosted on Total Choice Hosting. Always had good uptime and good performance.

Omnis is a site that's excellent, IMO.

Thanks for the leads gang, afraid this is going to take quite a bit of research. One I found in Texas is HostGator, reviews seem to be more positive than negative.

I'm still flabbergasted by Intuit's (Homestead) decision to drop FTP support, hope they loose enough customers that the idiot who made this decision gets fired.

I'll probably start at the new provider with Front Page but while researching providers I ran into an open source (freeware) site builder that really looks interesting.

http://www.joomla.org/

They actually call it a Content Manager but looks like it has enough bells and whistles to build anything from simple to very sophisticated.

If anyone is interested and has an hour or so to kill, go to the bottom of this page and view the recorded video. They are pushing CloudAccess hosting but HostGater also suports Joomla.

Thanks for your research time Bob; I'll take a look myself before my back is put up against the wall.
