Any good Hobby Shops in Kansas City?
« on: June 17, 2008, 01:45:40 PM »
I'm going to be in Kansas City tomorrow (6-18-08) from Minnesota with just a little spare time. Are there any LHS's worth stopping in to? If so, what's the address(s)?

 Thanks!

There were a lot of them when I lived there. That was 46 years ago.  Pop Schreiber has probably retired by now, but maybe the others are still open.

Hey Howard,
I left there about 46 years ago.....where were you?
My Hobby shop of choice was Ace Hobbies on 39th Street (long since closed after "Mr Mac" passed away).  I worked there after school which was right down the street.
I have no idea what the hobby situation is there now.

Too bad I was in Church camp when you were in town.  But, I see some have been gone too long.  Ace Hobby was on 31st in KCMo.  I would stop there on way to KCMA meetings.  Pop Shrieber passed on in the 70's, but, not before I got to meet him and see his shop.  Charlie's Hobby in KCK was done away with by a yong man who hit Charlie with shot gun blast in the face in the 60's.  Northeast Hobbywas vacated sometime in the late 60's.  Then the hardware store out on 40 highway closed out the hobby end of it in the early 70's.  I know it's too late but, there is a Charley's Hobby Shop in Raytown Mo.  Right now he is the only good shop in town as all the Hobby Town Shop,s have went all RC Car,  Trains or mainly toys.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

Hey Doc; When we lived in Roeland Park area back in the 40's, I used to ride my bike out to Mission ( about 3 miles ) to go to Hobby Haven hobby shop. Never had much money but I could drool all over the stuff they had. The guy who ran the place did not seem to mind us kids comming in and not buying much. Guess he thought we might suddenly become wealthy or something.

Thanks Jim,  I forgot about Hobby Haven.  I remember that little shop when I moved to Shawnee.  The shop is now located out at 103rd & Mecalf.  Not much in control line, but, has parts and stuff when needed.  DOC Holliday

Close Doc, but no cigar....
Ace was on 39 St. right up the road a couple of blocks from Westport HS and KC Jr College also on 39th St.  Gaduated from Westport and attended KCJC before entering the Army in 1961.
I worked at ACE after school.  Owner was Mr McCleod....have no idea what his first name was as everyone called him Mr MAC.  He could tell jokes continuously for days without ever repeating one.  Mr Mac's wife and a lady named Nellie Cerwin also worked there for many years.

Hmmmm.....good times .....miss them.
