Title: Any CL flyers around Savannah?
Post by: Bill Hodges on July 08, 2008, 01:46:53 PM
I am leaving for Savannah, GA on Thursday AM.  Going to play tourist for a few days.  Is there any CL flying activity in the area?  Also, any hobby shops in Savannah?

Of course, I have a visit to the 8th Air Force Museum planned.  And, I have been told that we are going to dine at "Paula Dean's".  I did not even know who Paula Dean was before we planned this trip.

Bill, Are you an 8th Air Force vet?  I served in the 8Th when stationed in Amarillo Texas in the early 60's.

I have been told that we are going to dine at "Paula Dean's".

I had to do that when we went down at the end of Feb.  Food was so-so IMHO.  Like you, I had no clue who Paula Dean was and really took a ribbing from my wife and others that overheard.  You have to get there early and put your name in for seating.  Parking is a real pain in the a$$ in that area.

Good seafood place just before you get to Tybee Island called The Crab Shack.  The "building" (shack) was pretty crude but the food was excellent.

Took one of the tours of the area.  Had a guide named "MoJo" and he was great.  Had everybody laughing throughout the tour.  About $17 per person but was really informative and ran about 90 minutes.

Some of our pics - http://www.pbase.com/11290/tybee_island.  Son-in-law was leaving for Iraq from Ft. Stewart and had a 3 day leave so we went down and stayed on Tybee Island.

Been to Savannah several times ,only found a R/C field  there and a Train shop on Bull St . Seen a lot of what you have in those oictures . The Crab Shak is one of the better places to eat out on Tybee  And the Oyster House on River Front is good too . I'm making myself hungry for a Low Country Boil .

Been to Savvannah many times, My dad grew up there. I dont know of any flying there, but there used to be a hobby shop out on,, hmm cant remember the name of the street, its down the road about a mile from my Grandmama's house we walked there many times.
couple sites to see, The Ships of the See Museum, is just off the downtown squares not far from the riverfront, its housed in the William Scarborough house, William Scarborough built the first steam ship to cross the atlantic, just a few years after Fulton built his steam ship. regretably, his ship was built from wood and for some odd reason, no body wanted to ship their goods of family members across the ocean on a wood ship that had to have a fire burning on it,, go figure lol HB~>.  There are several Forts of the Era around the war between the states close by, battle grounds, and if you want to make the wifey happy, the Juliet Gordon Lowe house is a museum in her house, she founded the Girl Scouts.
Lots of flying just south of Savanna though I believe around the Warner Robbins area.

Thanks for the replies.  No, I am not an 8th AF vet, but I am very interested in any kind of aviation museum.  From what I have seen on their web site, it should be a nice visit.

Sounds like I had better add the Crab Shack to the dining list.  It appears that the cottage that we have rented is about one mile from the Crab Shack.  Why is it that CL flyers always seem to know where all the good places to eat are located?

Bill,
Because we need a place to sit and "Hangar Fly" and good food supports that activity! :-)
