I received a cheque from my publisher a month ago, in return for some book reviews. A check would have been fine, but they apparently forgot what country I'm in and issued me a cheque drawn on a London bank. They're too big of an organization to understand taking it back and re-doing the transaction right.
My provincial little Oregon bank seems to be allergic to the letter 'q': they can barely handle Canadian cheques, and can't deal with British ones at all.
So -- if someone out there who can cash it wants to deal with a 3rd-party cheque for 75 pounds, and sell me some nice diesel engines or other nice modeling supplies, I'm open to suggestions. The agent's fees for running this through my bank exceed the face value of the cheque, so if it happens that I don't get full face value -- well, the rest is the agent's fee, right?

Ian Russell sells engines of high quality that are made in Russia or Ukraine. The Rustler-Mercos are good stuff, and he has some diesels, like a replica Oliver Tiger 2.5 with ABC setup. From what I understand, Ian does the assembly in England. I bought some R-M parts from Ian, and sent the US$ to somebody in San Francisco per Ian's directives, but your cheque would work even better. It often amazes me how most banks in the States have no clue how to handle foreign currency or bank notes. The UK uses a routing code called IBAN International Bank Account Number which is pretty much the same are the routing codes on our checks. It does mean that they have to process the cheque by hand and not just scan the bar code in. It's the lack of knowledge on the procedure that's at fault.
Go to just about any bank in the rest of the world and they have no technical problems with american bank checks or currency of any nationality.

Yup. I can go for months at a time carrying the illusion that I live in a 1st-world country. Then something like this happens.

Bank of America seems to have no problem dealing with checks from most other countries. A typical fee is about $6.00.
I'd find another bank quickly. Especially with the current volitility of the US Dollar! Not England's is terribly stable right now either.
The Euro is in real trouble. The Germans are getting tired of proping it up.
