Title: Another site
Post by: john e. holliday on October 31, 2010, 06:08:19 PM
I am sitting here handing out candy to the goblins, whitches, cow girls and yes even Super Man.  The mean time I pulled up this site that I have in my favorites,    www.fuelsoaked.me.uk/index.html   .    The owner is Zoe Quilter and has some very interesting stuff.  I just finished reading the October 1946 Aeromodeller.  I think who ever is in charge of advertising in our model mags could take a lesson.  I mean ads for safety razors(who's old enough to remember those), Bicycles and colleges.

One picture of a control speed model that set a record of 35 mph on petrol.  The glow plug had not yet been thought of in merry olde England.  Most of the construction articles were of glider and free flight rubber and petrol( that word again,  hope it's not a bad word).  I am now going back to the site as I don't think I can cover it in one night.  Later,

I've been following Zoe for a couple years now. Lotsa fun reading
those old mags.  And she has my nearly finished Perky as the lead
photo in that section.

It is fun reading the exploits of her modeling.  Took me a while to realize she was female. H^^

How many blokes do you know with the name Zoe, Doc?  LL~  I have to agree the adverts in the '40's '50's and even the '60's British mags were quite interesting! Everything from models to bicycles, cigarettes, you could join the Royal Navy or the RAF, I believe the Guinness beer company used to advertise as well! Virtually all the adverts were for British companies, all making a living from modelling or associated hobbies! My dad tells me England was a good place after WWII, according to him life was fairly free and easy, plenty of flying sites and nobody bothered you, in fact he says that most people that wandered by while he and he's mates were flying, showed an interest in what was going on, a big difference from nowdays, where you are considered a nuisance, or overgrown boys with toys. In 1947 aeromodelling was on the school curriculum, in an effort to make us air minded. I have most of those old mags, and often sit and read them, going back to a simpler life for a few hours!

I am pretty sure I've seen the British military advertise in a magazine pretty recently ... must have been a cycling magazine.

I think all 3 British military services are shedding personnel at the moment? And we are going to share aircraft carriers with the French, won't that be good? ??? I think we get to use them on Thursdays, and the weekends LL~. And we don't have any aircraft to put on them ?

Doc - Thanks for the link.

Dave, you didn't share!

Anyway, her bio is fascinating, and looking through her writings, one sees quite a variety and an active building and modeling life. Her kit-built racing plane looks like a real screamer! What a nice kit too.
