Strega (forgot that i´ve finished this one!!)
« on: April 06, 2016, 11:27:31 AM »
i was researching pictures at my laptop and found out these pictures of an Strega ARF
this one belongs to a friend, that asked another fellow builder to strip the covering and built it.
i just covered with oracover and painted the fuselage
unfortunately ended up too heavy for the 4T engine and know it´s juts for show, not competition flight.
i am pretty sure my paint was not responsible for the extra weight (lol)
anyway, completely forgot that i have done this finishing until i came across the pictures!

Fred,

Nice looking model!  Really nice!! H^^

What do you attribute the extra weight to? Being an ARF built with non contest grade balsa?

thanks a lot Charles!
we´re talkin about 2200 kg with the 4T engine! (77,6 oz?) if i´m right
later was electric converted and with engine and battery weight was 2,050kg, wich is still heavy for competition
the owner, Rogerio Fiorotti gave up and keeps the plane just because of the beauty
the final weight was a combination of factors:
the ARF may have some heavyer balsa than expected (not sure now), the design uses a LOT of ribs, too much indeed
a friend of us stripped the covering and assembled the model, he had changed the flaps that came badly sanded and warped for some heavyer stock
i have no idea of what else he may have done that added weight but the flaps are one of, the originals was about 3/16 and he used 1/4 heavy wood
not sure if he replaced anything else. then he or me (really can´t remember) covered the whole fuselage with 3/4 oz fiberglass with finish resin
back then (about 6 years ago) we both used to build F3A and scale big R/C planes and this was the norm for finish.
so this push weight up for sure, then i had the "brilliant" idea to brush the primer instead of spraying, more bad decision....ok, i have sanded a lot the primer but the final outcome was heavy.
learnt the lesson, now that i am fully back to C/L my finish got better and lighter and new materias came to the game...
it´s a learning curve

2200 grams, presumably, or 77.6 ounces. That's not at all prohibitive, it was intended to be pretty heavy, as it was overbuilt to provide a good engine run with an ST60. I know of a 585 square inch airplane that is upward of 72 ounces that is likely going to qualify at the NATs this year. Don't worry about it, go fly it and see.

Rogerio, the owner now flies electric so this bird is just for looks
i´ve finished his Thundergazer with 1,600 kg

My Strega weighs 78 oz flight ready.  ST 60 pulls it along fine.

If you've got enough motor it'll be fine at that weight. y1

Fred,

What a nice Thundergazer!  H^^

Another fine job you did using iron on material, paint and auto clear.

I would really like to try that system Fred, I'm lacking courage.

What would be the eqivalent in the USA for the material you use in Brazil?

It should have good penetration  VD~ in gusts !  S?P

If its a bit divergent of wont track true , check the lines for  s t r e t c h   .

Thee olde ' run down the lines with a rag , with the ends free to rotate
( one in ea. palm of the volenteer , with his thumb in hold ) .
you can loose yards of rubberyness from new ( & used ) lines , thus .

You keep running downem with the cleaning rag , till they sit still in the suckers grasp .
Cept its not a grasp , as theyve gotta be rotationally unrestrained .  ;D

If theres any bothers, add NITRO .  S?P H^^ needlingll be easier & running rich itll hold .

thanks for all the input guys!
since the owner of the Strega went full electric, this plane is useless for e-comppetiton due to marginal performance
now he have a state of the art Thundergazer (the one in the picture with me) and he completely gave up glow
no doubt this one could perform, but not for serius competition with this weight
so he choose to leave her resting as an hanger queen
