I haven't flown CL in 35 years. Not since some combat flyer showed up at my house with a newly restored 442. After 35 years of NHRA competition said bad influence shows a picture on facebook of him flying the Twister I sold him 35 years ago.

Back then I built three of the Allen Brickhouse P-63s, bashed a few Midwest P-51s and P-63 kits, a couple of Twisters and Banshees. Bob MacDonald even designed a semi-profile airplane for me while I stood in his basement. Also, did a bunch of 1/2A foam combat stuff, too. I cut all my own foam wings. Bad influence and I cut a ton of fast combat panels. I belonged to the Garden City Sky Razors when I was a kid.

So much has changed in modeling. My last two Twisters were finished with polyurethane ( Varathane in colors ) fuses and tail feathers and Monocoat wings. That isn't done anymore? Also, it looks like big business has done in the local hobby shops and the flyers all seem older like me.

I'm looking forward to this but, I suspect I'll spend a more time lurking than posting. I got my old AMA number back and I joined PAMPA as well.

Well, I have another Twister kit here and I guess I'll give that a go. I have two engines to use. an OS .40 and an OS .46 LA

Welcome back Bruce!!  I got back into the hobby myself 2 years ago after nearly 30 years away.  You're right, a lot has changed. I'm most fortunate to still have access to a real life old fashioned hobby shop here in Spokane. For a while I became the owners most entertaining customer. I kept asking for things and making him laugh....lol.

Bruce, there’s a contest in Ellenton on April 7-8. It’s not far from Auburndale. You should try to go.
I know of a CL guy somewhere near Lakeland. Several on the Gulf coast between Venice and Weeki Wachee.
We have a small group of 3-4 that flies on Wednesday mornings in Winter Garden.
Bottom line is, you are not alone.

Agreed. I fly my.twister with a .28. When I get caught up and build another one, I'll use a Brodak .40.
My suggestion is build the twister stock out of the box and use your .40. Save your 46LA for later, on a bigger plane. The more you talk with people, the more you'll learn the value of the 46LA in a control line application.

Tim, the 40 is an FP. I do have a set of Fancherized Twister plans here.

Somewhere on this forum someone offered the sage advice to build more than one plane at a time. I think that's a good plan and one I'm considering. Also, I'm also thinking of just sticking with just the Twister design while re-acquainting myself with flying again.

You know, I'm starting with nothing here. No handle, no lines, no flight box, nuttin'. Do we still use Fireplug igniter batteries? 10-6W props? Master Airscrew? optical tachs?

Brodaks has all that you need, and they're great people.  Get a handle and lines from them for a start.

Most folks use NiCd ignitors.  I got a "Homer Box" from Home Depot for $10 that makes a nice flight box.

The right prop depends on the engine and the plane.  The 40FP with an APC 12.25 x 3.75 should be a good combination with a Twister.  I'd suggest trying out an APC 11.5x4, too -- one or the other will be the right one.  Do not attempt to run the 40FP like a Fox 35 -- it wants to run in a wet two-stroke, never breaking into a four.  With the recommended props I'd start by launching at 9800 RPM and go up or down from there as the plane tells you what it wants.

If you live close to a CL flying field go fly with experienced people -- they'll get you on the right track.
