Title: Another First for me.....
Post by: Paul Taylor on July 07, 2011, 08:32:04 AM
I will be adding a trim tab to the wing of my plane using a threaded push rod. What are some of the best ways to attache the rod to the wing tip that is already covered in silkspan.

And remember a picture is worth 1000 words. H^^

I typically build in a sheet balsa or lite ply platform in the tip. Drill a 1/16th hole and thread a Z-bend into the hole. don't know how to get one safely in Silkspan. Maybe an overlay of lite F/G?

Wonderful photo Claudio.

How far down does your horn go in the wing tip?

That wing tip looks like mine, but I do not have that green hole. What is that for?

- 1/4" , aprox.

- That green hole is actuallly the weight box (cut from a Pelikan text highlighter in this case, or any other fat marker)

That is very neat looking. You will have to show us how you do that weight tip box.

Oh, it's ridiculously simple:

1. Cut the marker to the desired length.
2. Cap the inside end with a balsa plug glued with some CA.
3. Install in the wing tip.
4. Sand to shape.

Paul...Here's a picture of what I did on my Humongous. The anchor is a wingtip skid. This one was Goldberg, but Hobbico or Great Planes makes one very similar. I drilled the hole for the pushrod, and threaded the one end of the pushrod with a die...probably 3-48 thread, or maybe 2-56. There's a ribbed peg on the flange face of the skid. I put the hole (carefully) for the peg through the capstrip on the rib centerline, and epoxied the skid on. Worked fine, and looked alright. It's on the bottom of the outboard tip.   y1 Steve

Paul,

The pictures claudio provided are what I was attempting to describe over the phone.  Very clean and simple.
