Umland Shark 15 engine
« on: January 24, 2010, 03:11:57 PM »
I have a Umland shark 15 kit that i have had on the shelf for a few years. It has been calling to me to open it and start building. I had a Jetco shark15 back int the late 70's that i ran a cox 15 on. I don't have the Cox 15 anymore so my question is what engine would be a good fit for this plane?

10FP, 15LA for reasonably modern engines. Most of the older baffle-piston 15's and 19's work well, like a ST G20/15. That's like harnessing a thoroughbred to a plow, to some extent.  And there are a fair number of Cox Sportsman and Medallion 15's around if you want to do a little searching.

Not a Fox, of course. I would hate to actually use a Fox 15 in an airplane when it's in such demand for The Hurl. But it would fly the airplane nicely if you have one that you are sure runs well.

My Jetco versions all had OS20-S baffle piston motors of early-70's vintage. The originals had Max II or Max III 15s, as I recall. With an Umland kit (which I have had in half-complete state for about 5 years) it would be light enough that even old baffle-piston 15s would probably give excellent performance. I would also be very tempted to try something like a Big Mig .061, or an F1J motor, but it would be a real stretch the way the airplane is constructed. It's no bigger than some "full house"1/2A stunters that fly well on Medallion 049s but the construction is way beefier than it needs to be for a 1/2A. I would stick with the recommendations above unless you are willing to take a chance.

Thanks guys! I have a Veco 19 but i fig that would spin me right into the ground. I have a n OS 10 but it feels heavy for a 10 size engine. I have seen Cox 15's on the bey but it is hard for me to spend that kind of dough on a Cox 15 when i bought my first one for only 19.95 in 1975. I will start the build and when i get to the point of no return i will decide. Thanks for the help

Randy beat me to it but I used an Enya 15 on Walts kit. It is a perfect match.

I've built two, one scratch from Jetco plans and the other from an Umland kit.  I powered them with TD 09's, 10% Sig Champion, 20% 50/50 oil, Cox 7 x 3.5 propellers. 55 ft .012 lines.  I placed in Advanced with with them a few times.  Really good flying airplanes.

I scratch build this one from plans with my son.
We use an OS 15FP and it flys wonderfully.  It balances right on the wing spar with this motor.
The OS 15FP is a perfect match for a Shark 15.
