Angela's Skyray
« on: May 19, 2013, 08:39:47 PM »
Well, poor J May was ill but Angela's Mom brought her over and we dug in. It was really better, having two going at once while trying to built along with them would have been tough. Anyway, I've NEVER seen a kid so focused, intense and tenacious. We started at 2 PM Saturday afternoon and worked til 10:30 that night and she finished it. She only took one break, and only enough time for the necessity and she was right back. Never any sign of boredom or distractedness, she was tuned in!! I didn't have time to make up the lines, I bought .008 braided line and had to make them, up, so we didn't get to fly today, but I did get the lines done tonight and hopefully we can fly tomorrow. She's quite an accomplished helicopter pilot too, I repaired her Hercules 14" chopper and she flew is some today, I flew my Double Horse too. She also discovered how much "fun" my John Deere lawn tractor is and mowed 1 1/2 of my 3 acres. So, without further ado (is that a word?) here are some shots of the day and night in the shop. Angela has the prettiest smile, don't you think? ALL the guys will be jealous cuz of my new flying buddy!!!!!!

The intensity in the face tells it all.   She is pretty too.   Now if I can get my granddaughters to look at this.

I'm a little disappointed. I posted this not only to share it but hoping for a bit of encouragement for Angela. Paul and John, thanks for yours. So far 125 people have looked at this and only two left comments. Kids need encouragement and back pats to move them along. I was hoping to show this to her but it may be more discouraging then anything.

Well Randy and Angela,
Looking at the pictures reminded me of building with Grace back in the day.  Good times and memories for me to be sure.  The airplane looks great.  The next battle will be waiting for a good day to fly.  She probably will tire of the Skyray after she masters it in a few flights and be ready to hang it up in her room and move on to the next project.  Best of luck, have fun and hope to see you at the Tour d' Michigan in Flint at the end of July so you can show off your skills.

Hi John, so good to hear from you!!!! I'm going to order a Baby Clown, she really got into the building. She can fly my big Skyray too but I want to step her up. She's so unlike kids now, she told me when we were working that she always wanted to do something like this but was never helped or encouraged. I'm changing that, she did an incredible job. She never once touched her electronic games, she was totally engaged, it was beautiful.

Are you back in the states now?

The Skyray may keep her occupied for quite awhile. Assuming you set the throws at minimum for her to learn round-n-round, she can increase the throws and eventually do some stunts with it.

Good show Angela for being interested and good show Randy for passing on some knowledge.

Thanks all, this is looking more like I'm used to seeing, I can't wait to show her this thread now. Angela will be 12 next month. Her lil sister Julia May,(I call her J May) is 9, she's going to join us now that she's feeling better. Mom Robin is also learning to fly so I'll have quite the group to fly with. This is gonna be fun!

Randy,
I am still in Korea, but was back for the Lansing TDM earlier in the month.  Actually I was back for a business meeting and it just happened to fall around the time of the contest.....  Kind of like last year for the Signal Seekers event.  Looks like summer of 2014 before I am back full time.

Glad to hear that she is enjoying the building and that the two of you are having fun building together.  Keep up the good work.  I will be back for the Flint TDM if you guys come up.  Would be great to see some new faces at the circle.

Unfortunately we're going to have to wait until next weekend to fly. Angela's Mom and Dad are divorced and this is his weekend. So next Saturday, weather permitting, we will have a flight report. I built one too so she can fly mine first, she afraid of breaking hers!

Thanks all for the great comments, I'll try to get a vid clip of her flying and post it.

Dear Angela
My biggest compliments, very nice looking model you have build.
Wish you very good flights and happy landings.

Your new model remembers me alot about my very first COX Baby-Bee Balsa sheet Trainer
I have build 1967 at age of thirteen.
Working afternoons after school in a laundry shop next corner
collecting tips to purchase my first engine , the COX Baby-Bee.
Price-tag in those days was 32,50 DM, Deutsche Mark.
8 weeks later ,proud as a King, I was walking to the local
Hobby-Shop to buy that little beast.
I had to make a few CL interruptions because Military, other interests and Sports
like Squash, bicycling, riding Bare Back Horses in the E.R.C.A. series and after
Motorcycle Racing, National Rally-Cup.
Sold my Squash racket, sold my Spurs and Chaps and sold my Motorcycle many years ago.
Since then IŽam still hooked up in Control line Hobby and Sports.
Flying F2D Combat, Speed Limit Combat, F2F Racing and F2B-B Stuntpattern.
Wish you all the BEST for your CL FUTURE, lots of FUN and allways HAPPY landings.
My full respect to you Randy as well.

I hate pessimists, I prefer optimists.
Impossible is done immediately, miracles take longer.
I don't care who your father is ......... as long as I fly here,
Nobody walks, runs, floats or flies across my circle ......... not even to fetch fish, wine or bread.
