Title: And, speaking of COLD!!!!
Post by: Robert Zambelli on February 02, 2014, 07:29:58 PM
This is the St. Joseph Lighthouse on Lake Michigan. Today, it is encased in ice
as the Midwest was hit with wind chills that reached -50 degrees.
Looks better in the summer!

Looks like a shaggy old sheep dog to me.  How about the frozen over Niagra Falls, that reminds me of my youth 80 miles East of Buffalo/Niaga Falls.

Mother nature does create some strange art work.

21 degrees here as well, I went across 40 acres to find my horses happily hunkered down on a south facing slope, out of the NW wind that made it feel like 10* and by the time I got back in the house, my hands were numb. Next time I'll remember my insulated gloves! :P

Here's a tip for you, John: When wearing insulated gloves in 0 deg. F. conditions, pull them off about 1/2", so that there is an air pocket at the fingertips. Mucho warmer! I figured this out on a Boyscout campout with my son. It was midnight, full moon, 0 F. and we were hiking around the scout camp to stay warm. My fingertips were getting cold, but pulling them down and creating an air gap at the end helped tremendously.

We had a few volunteers in the cabin (thankfully, no tent BS) trying to get the wood stove going. The firewood was frozen, and they wouldn't use my bag of magnesium chips.  D>K Steve

I'm watching one of my Daughter[Iris'] show goats, it will be her[Swiss'] first time to give birth. I was out there at least 5 times today, once for about 3 hours....Iris also has a miniature filly about 8 months old; thought I was an eskimo pie and was biting clean through my layers and carhartt outer jacket. One of these days I'm gonna be too old for this crap! LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

Just wondering, why isn't the other lighthouse at the end of the pier covered in ice also?

Bill the picture of the iced lighthouse is looking back toward the beach and the first pic is from the beach.  Cheryl and I were up there in Sept and have some photos of that same place-Holland-I think.

Instead of gloves, get mittens.  Remember those as a kid.   I have a pair I used doing crossing duty.  Makes a big difference on keeping hands warms.  Seen another pair of gloves that were on the same theory of mittens in which the finger portion of the glove folded back to reveal the fingers.

The YMCA closed the outdoor swimming pool today because of inclement weather.  There were complaints.

We had an ice storm in Portland yesterday, but it finally got above freezing today, with a toasty 38 degrees F.  ;D
