Myself and a friend of mine each have a cylinder from a Continental R-670 radial engine. This is the engine that originally equipped in the Stearman PT-17 for many years. We picked them up at the EAA Museum Garage Sale seveal years ago, with the idea of making them into table lamps. They have been sitting, because I have been looking for some valve covers for them. I figured they would look a little better with some nice, polished valve covers on them. But I have not been able to find any. I'm putting a shout out here that I'm looking for four (4) valve covers for the R-670 Continental. They don't have to be perfect or air worthy, I can weld up any cracks and repair any broken mounting ears and such. They just need to be workable. If anyone knows where I can make contact for these, drop me a PM or email. I would like to get going on this project before either one of us get any older!!!
Thanks a lot!

Dan, I'm sending you a contact who may be able to help. It could be worth a phone call.

Dan, You might google R-670 overhaul. If you can find an overhaul shop for R-670's they might be able to sell you a couple of valve covers.
Good luck!

Hi De;
I have done exactly that, and have emails out to several companies, but have gotten no response just yet. Phone calls nay be better but hard to do at work during the day. I have even pinged a few down your way in Oklahoma, like Dusters and Sprayers Inc in Chickasaw. If you look up the Stearman PT-17 and engines used, there is quite a variance over the years. Plus I have seen R-670, R-680, W-670, almost like trying to decode a Waco! And then there are the different varieties within one displacement! But I imagine they tried for some commonality in parts and maybe used the same valve cover on all. Time will tel. I'll try calling some this weekend.
Type at you later,

Hey Dan, have you tried the Stearman Restorers Association? Ed.

The EAA runs them on at least 4 planes... I’m nearly certain they’ll have some laying around. Call, ask for John Hopskin, director of maintenance, he should be able to help.
If necessary, have him give them to Kristy Busse, and I can figure out payment and shipping.
I lived there for a few years just recently, that’s how I know all this. Spent a lot of time volunteering in the maintenance hangar.
I remember seeing those engines new in crates setting around stacked like cordwood at the Naval Aviation Museum. I was told they were NOS for Sherman Tanks... that was thirty years ago...

Hi Dan,
A lot of shops respond to phone calls and money. I find this in car shops too, a phone call talking to the person operating the place will get you farther.
How about your buddy Sean Elliot?
Chris...
