As I mentioned in an earlier post, we have a new "event" for the Brodak Fly-In. #^
We will attempt to enter the book of records by having the most model airplane engines running at the same time. LL~
Rules are simple: Bring an engine and run it along with, hopefully, around 100 other people. - That's it. ~^ ~^
I will have details posted at the Fly-In. The attempt will be on Thursday.

I hope somebody brings a sound meter. Would be interesting to see how loud it is.
-
100 engines? That's it? Tell everyone to bring at least three engines. ;D
-
Could end up like the World Pole Vault record - increase by 1 engine each year! #^
-
If you have everyone aim their engines in the same direction, with that many people/engines, you guys should be able to change the earth's rotation. LL~
-
Sounds like my kind of trick.
-
What would 100 Fox 59's sound like? A hundred 30,000 rpm combat motors? A hundred Dynajets? A hundred electric motors maybe?

Don't know...............but get pictures! ;D

Well, last year if we had runn 100 engines at the same time AND pointed them the same direction we might have been able to blow away some of that weather! :o >:D LL~ LL~ LL~

I own a sound meter. I will bring it to Brodak plus two planes with engines AND ear plugs.

Clancy's remark about ear plugs is well taken and should be a mandatory thing for everyone there not just the guys running the engines. You get a lot of unmuffled Fox 35's running at once and you will move to the next county to get away from the noise. Seriously though you could have severe damage done to your hearing without protection. Post the appropriate warnings at the site.

Even the little cheapy shooters ear plugs would make a difference. Me I just turn off the hearing aids. LL~ LL~ LL~

What is the current record? Do they even accept records like this?

Guiness probably just starts another catagory of meaningless records for someone else to try and break. Seriously do you even care when a Guiness record is made or broken?
Dennis
I wonder who is going to break the record for the longest flatulence? LL~ LL~ LL~ H^^

Now THAT would be noteworthy! I vote for Will the Farter on that one.

Do engines in planes count???
Looking foward to the attempt!!! #^

Hello Bob,
Not trying to sound too negative, but we go to great lengths to keep a circle clear for flying an airplane and now we are trying to run 100+ engines within "what" proximity of each other. I plan on attenting Brodaks this year but do not get excited about 100 engines running at the same time in such a "small" area. The hearing protection concerns have already been voiced.

Here's a meaningless record. The record for fitting the most people in a phone booth is 16 people...

Heck, I can beat that, easy! Just let me stop by the maternity ward first.

Fry and Bender are in the Robot loony bin and see many insane robots...
They see an Abraham Lincoln robot
Fry: "Let me guess, he thinks he's Lincoln?"
Bender: "He's supposed to. But the problem is that he's got multiple personalities - ALL of them Lincoln!"
lincoln robot stands up to speak..
Lincolnbot: "I was born in 200 log cabins."

At least the log cabins were in the USA... VD~ Steve

I cant remember the last time I've seen a phone booth ....

sounds like fun Bob look forward to seeing it on Youtube

Do you need to bring your own running stand?
-
As long as you have an engine running, it will not matter how you do it. On a stand or on a plane. Electric starters are permitted.
Recip engines only - no jets or electrics.
I strongly suggest that everyone use mufflers. Most of the Fly-In people do so anyway.
The event will be planned. We will arrange the participants by groups. Engine starting will be in a specific order to insure that every person in each group has thier engine running before the next group starts.
There will be adequate spacing between participants and all will wear some sort of eye protection.
Ear protection is also reccomended.
Final details will be available at the Fly-In.

Bob,
Thanks for the response. I could not imagine a better opportunity for things to go wrong without good coordination. Thanks for the response. I look forward to attending.

Anyone think of clearing this with the AMA safety regs? I'd hate to see John in some form of grief over this...
Ward-O :'(

We don't have to clear anything with the ama. n1 n1
This IS NOT part of the official ama event.
It's simply an interesting diversion that John has decided to have on his property. #^

With the Z-man involved, you can expect some something a tad more elaborate. I picture Bob decked out in white tie and tails, waving an orchestra conductor's baton. If we tweak our needles in unison to Bob's conducting, we might get something like this --

I REALLY, REALLY want to see this happen.
Mr. Z, could you please make sure this gets video taped and posted.
I will not be able to be there, but you know the sight and SOUND will be unlike anything we've ever experienced.
This will truly be TOO COOL. #^
Awesome idea Bob.

even better on AUDIO! ;D

Count me in!!!
I will have my LA .46 ready with a one flip "Sterner Start". <=
And Chris, don't worry. I plan on having my video camera on a tripod or field box or something where it will get a shot to post on U-Tube. LL~

Bob,
Question: I am bringing 3-4 planes to fly and all of my engines start rather easily. Could I loan one or all of these to knowledgeable people who may not have a plane with them. A lot of people attend Brodaks and don't enter is why I asked the question.
Another scenario: Girls friends, wives, kids who launch for the pilots but don't fly themselves. Could I recruit these folks, have them hold the planes and then start all engines myself?
I think this is a great idea whoever came up with it. Safety concerns: Eye protection and ear muffs, plugs are a great idea, should be mandatory. My thought would be to place in lines like the NATs appearance point judging with about 10 feet or so between lines. Side by side proximity shouldn't be an issue. We do that all the time.
100 engines------------ ????? I think you could easily have 2-3-400 if the above things are permitted.
My thoughts, Later John

You really need a couple of Super Cyclones on gasoline, to add a little noise to all those muffled engines. LL~ LL~
-
This is how it will work.
1) All participants must register, as I want a list for the record attempt.
2) ONE person per engine. Each participant starts his/her own plane. This will be done for safety and simplicity. No helpers allowed - too much confusion.
3) No movement. I want the participant to start the engine, stand up and raise his arm, indicating that the engine is running.
4) This will be done on a row-by-row basis. Depending on the number of participants, I will set up rows.
For example, if there are 75 participants, it will be five rows of fifteen people each.
5) When I give the signal, the people in the LAST row will start their engines. When I see fifteen hands up, I will signal the next row and so forth. I will allow one minute per row before mving on to the next row. If an engine will not start, the participant should keep trying. If an engine stops, refuel and restart.
6) When all engines are running, we will quickly count hands - I will have a number of assistants.
7) The entire event will be videotaped by at least three cameras.
8) When appropriate, I will give a signal and all engines will be shut down.
Of course, the rules will be plainly posted at the Fly-In
Bob Z.
-
You should add a "step 8" to your schedule.
8) All engines run at a 4-cycle setting for 1 minute. Then adjusted for a fast 2-cycle run for 1 minute, followed by
1 minute of 4-cycle.
This would add some variety to the show.

I hope somebody brings a sound meter. Would be interesting to see how loud it is.
Once the SPL gets to be 10 dB over the loudest engine, more will not increase the loudness. dB is logrithmic, so 10 dB louder is 10 times louder.
Also, the "cheapy" foam ear plugs offer the highest noise reduction rating of any of the normally available hearing protection. If you are really concerned, wear plugs under muffs, but you only get a max of about 45 dB noise reduction due to bone conduction taking over at that point.
