Amazing what lands in the back yard

Last Saturday, while working in my garage, I heard the most incredible racket - the unmistakable sound of the real thing: A RADIAL ENGINE!!!!   

I went over to check it out - a fellow landed his SNJ to pick up some fuel.

After introducing myself and chatting for a while, he said he was about to leave and did I want to get some neat photos. He told me where to stand next to the runway.

He then fired it up and set up for takeoff. When he started his takeoff roll, I could actually feel the pressure waves.   

He took off, did a chandelle type turn and then a full-bore pass down the runway at about 30 feet. He also turned on the smoke. The combination - smoke and noise - was awesome. For those of you who don't know it, an SNJ (or AT-6 or Harvard) is a machine that converts gasoline into noise - LOTS OF IT!!!!

Nothing like the sound of a nine cylindar Harley with wings, I used to work for a crop duster repairing airframes and such, the sound of those 1340 radials will send chills down your spine, especially the startup when its coughing and slowly waking up,, man what memories!!!

Got to fly one of those last summer, courtesy of my wonderful daughter and son-in-law. 

Needless to say, it was the thrill of my life, and I'm still smiling a year later! 

They gave me a military training manual for the T-6/SNJ for Xmas, and I was really delighted with that.

Imagine my surprise when I found an envelope inside, and in the envelope a certificate for a one hour flight, in one of Kevan Kegin's American Warbirds!

Anyway, my one hour full aerobatic flight stretched into an hour and a half total (long story), and I got to do a low level fly-by for the family before turning it over to the pilot for landing!

I've about worn out the video tape of that flight, watching it repeatedly, and reliving those precious moments.

I can tell you now, that the sound of that radial engine is pure music from the front seat!

Hi, everybody - nice to read all the feedback.

I'm really looking forward to settling down in South Carolina and spending more time in the air - even though my little Piper can't compare with a warbird. 

As I understand it, the fellow flies in quite often (we has a fuel dock on the plantation), maybe someday, I'll get a ride. 

I hope that anyone who happens to be driving through SC on I-95 will stop and visit. 

Exit 115, 1.8 miles east on Rt 130, right turn into Palmetto Air Plantation.

Didn't mean to kidnap this post...but as I was reading it, I thought I was being attacked with an AK-47! RAAAAT-A-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!!!! got my attention very quickly.
 Amazing how loud that pecker-head sounded on that hollow dead tree.

I also have a pecker wood in my back yard.  Don't know what kind...I just get to hear the ratta-tat-tat
every morning except when I get up really early to go to ....ugh...work....

RGR.  I knew you were living in the Philadelphia PA area, and that sure didn't look like Wings Field, at least the way it looked three weeks ago.
