AMA Reference Manual
« on: November 14, 2007, 09:30:32 AM »
Just got off the phone with the agency collecting info for the AMA Reference manual.  Can you believe the AMA Reference manual/phone book only cost $88.00.  I told her thanks, but no thanks.

Now, I have been accused of being miserly by many of my aqaintenances; however, I can't imagine too many AMA members who will be willing to pay $88.00 for a phone book.

Sounds like they are trying to do the same thing as the PAMPA reference manual. Maybe not a bad idea but not for eighty eighty bucks.

In my opinion, a total load of C**p.

I can't believe that they would do such a ridiculous thing WITHOUT A POLL.

Yes, pampa has a manual but it's trivial compared to the ama. Plus, the ama has a large number of advertisers, none of whom I want to have my personal phone number.

Plain and simple - I DO NOT WANT MY PHONE NUMBER SOLD.

If it comes out in a manual that is sold to members, I will change my phone number.

The people who I want to have my number will get it from me - NOT from the ama.

Sorry for the rant but I do not think it's fair that someone profits in this way.

Bob I got a postcard yesterday from the AMA that said I had to call in the next two weeks to give them my info and if I didn't I wouldn't be in the book. So I just threw it away.

Funny--Bob--- you don't count.  The wife and I got one  for her and one for me ---total---TWO.  I don't think we will give them OUR  numbers either.  All that info is probably on the Web site anyway, and any hacker worth his salt can probably get in in less time than it would take to tear up the application card anyway.

This is an independent group that has struck a deal with the AMA to produce this "Directory". My kids received the exact same post card but for the High School that they graduated. It's a way that organizations can make a few bucks without any effort... just give that outside group the address files!  As Bob Z. said... that's C**P

Ty has it down pretty straight.  Phone numbers, etc., are NOT difficult to find anyway.  Many of us are listed in PAMPA right now!  Getting any address or phone number is pretty simple for a lot of people and if you know what you're doing, it wouldn't take long!

But, I don't agree with SELLING information without permission.  I didn't see a disclaimer anywhere in our AMA materials where we signed away our rights and privileges.

 Hi Guys

Don't worry this is no big deal, If you do not want your name and phone number there, It will not  be  there, you have to contact them and  "ask"  to be in the manual.
this is the quote from the AMA mail out about the manual.

"""We are currently in the final stages of editing your biographical information to be included in the Academy of Model Aeronautics Membership Directory, but we need help! A brief telephone call will ensure your listing is included, accurate and up-to-date.

Please, give us a call at your convenience within the next two weeks so that we may include you in the directory.

Note - If you haven't responded in any way to date, you will NOT be in the Directory at all!"""

Regards
Randy

All the people I want to contact and have contact me are all on this forum. And con do so here. I could care less if some RC guy thinks he or she need to get ahold of me. They probly be local and I'm in the phone book.

Lou, and all who've commented...

I didn't get an invite to "the Book."

Darn!!  >:D

Just recently renewed AMA, and DID check the boxes indicating I did not wish AMA to send me anything except official AMA business. Maybe that also tells them not to sell my personal info?

When I got the first letter I thought this was a great idea. The AMA was going to put together a list of all the members. I sure would like to look up some old friends, however I never responded. Now that I got the second post card and found out this was for proffit from an outside firm I decided it was not for me. I can't think of anyone wanting to spend $90.00 for this. If the brains behind this could see that a $19.95 price would sell a few thousand and the $90.00 would sell 3, they could make more money at the reasonable price. IMHO!
