AMA Needs help building a CL airplane
« on: March 20, 2014, 04:04:29 PM »
The Academy of Mostly ARF's is tying to build a replica of Bob Palmer's original Go-Devil and they need some help.  Since 1940 was a few years before I was born, my contribution to the effort is to post this message.  Below is what was in the AMA Today, today:

Go-Devil Memories

Bob Palmer’s Go-Devil was designed in the late 1940s and considered to be the first Control Line Stunt model flown with flaps.  The museum is in the process of building a replica of this model for the collection, but we’ve hit a snag.

We’ve been unable to locate photographs of the original model and don’t know the color scheme.  A source has said that the colors were red with black trim, but we are hoping to corroborate this with others.  Since this is becoming part of the museum collection, we want the model to be as accurate and authentic as possible.

The only image we have found is this black and white photograph of the Go-Devil on the original kit box.
If you have memories or photographs of Palmer’s original Go-Devil, please email Maria at mariav@modelaircraft.org , or call (765) 287-1256, ext. 508.

I think Jim Lee is flying one here at VSC in Ignition Old Time.  Finished 2nd.
Most of the guys (certainly not all) that could help with this are here at VSC.  I will post some pictures of Jim's tomorrow.
I'm having camera problems right now but have several pictures in the camera (on the card) if I can get them off!

Not trying to stir anything up but I thought the article on the use of RC aircraft in archaeological sites was interesting, referring to the cover.  Don't read that as support for ARF's over building.

I guess some people can't remember when most of the coverage and building was free flight and control line.   Back then you had to have a radio license to play with radio control.   Times have changed.  Maybe someone can clue Jim Lee about this so he can maybe help them out with the details of the plane.

Actually Doc, most people on this forum can remember when the AMA magazine had more emphasis on building and types of modeling other than R/C, ARFs and now drones...or to be politically correct (gag) "Quad Copters". My comment was meant to be, as they say, tongue in cheek but humor sometimes gets lost on this forum

As far as drones go, the article on archaeology was interesting.  I can see drones taking over much of the work that previously were relegated to helicopters such as aerial photography and cinematography, aerial search and surveillance, power line inspection, bridge and structure inspection, even crop dusting (that is already happening in Japan). Guess I got out of the rotary wing industry just in time. And as for the Go Devil, I always thought it was Red and Black also but VSC is the only place I have seen one.   8)
