I took some new pics this morning.

This my Strega ARC prototype that I wrote about in CLW.  The wing and tail are covered in $kote, and then the rest is finished in basecoat/clearcoat.  the whole plane is clear coated.

It has a PA 65 on an Eather muffler.  It weighs 74 oz.

What did you use for a canopy?  I like the look. Muffler's interesting, too. Is it quiet?  Retro 60 quiet?

You clearcoated the whole plane?  What did you do to prep the moneycoat before clear coating it?  Automotive Polyurethane clear, correct?

I've always thought you had a good grahpic design and color choice sense. Really like the color combination.

The $kote clear coats great.  Once it is clear coated it takes on a completely different quality.  It does not "drum" anymore (I hate that) meaning "make noise" and it does not seem to sag either. I guess the clear gives the film a lot of surface tension.  It certainly appears to make film much stronger.

I would recommend dulling the surface with a 3m Scotch Brite pad.  The clear will need some sanding scratches to flow into.  Then just make sure the surface is free of oil.

I think we Cl guys are missing the boat not using more film.  Especially Phil's SLC film, which appears to be the universal base.

I flew the Valkyrie today for the first time.

Hey, this thing flies good.  Maybe even real good when I get the handle set. #^

My PA 65 on a muffler is the best engine set up I may have ever flown in my life.  It runs like big Fox 35.  Solid 4 cycle in level flight an little "neeps" at the tops of the manuevers.

Easy peasy, no brainer, stunt powerplant.  Just what I wanted.

That truly is incredible.
I'm very very interested in the clear coating process you used.

In the early 90's (1992-93) I covered a stunter entirely with monokote (actually had done 6-7 that way), and clear coated it with Dupont (something) and it caused the monokote to sag over the open bays and wrinkle up over the wood structure.  It then refused to shrink with heat.  Terriffic MESS.
Can you tell me where to get this clear coat you're using and any special application instructions that might apply.

This plane was Omni clear coat.  It is the cheaper (more acrylic) version of PPG clear.

The $kote never even seemed to know it was coated.

You will need to scratch the $kote with a 3M pad.  Do not skip this step!!!  Wipe down the film with solvent, and then shoot the first coat very dry.

Other than that, it was just like painting anything else.

Thanks for the info.  I'm going to try it very soon.  Can I assume that my local auto paint store should  have the Omni coat, or do I need to order it from someone?
