Control Line World magazine.
« on: January 07, 2016, 08:22:44 AM »
I have heard that, most unfortunately, Control Line World magazine is in it's final year of publication.  Only three issues remain.

The stated reason was a shortage of subscribers.  I, for one, have extended my subscription to the end.  Worst case, I get the last three issues.   Optimistically, maybe enough business might convince Mr. Brodak to continue.

I hope others will join me in supporting this fine publication.

Also the writer pool is getting smaller. They need more people to write the articles. I get emails from Nikki from time to time to write something for them. I am not the person that is comfortable writing that much. I do enjoy the magazine and wish Control Line World luck.

John says in his editorial the October issue will be the last.  He says postage costs is the culprit.   Hate to see a great magazine go away.  But with the online forums and electronic magazines I can see it being put to rest.   I am keeping my issues because of the articles that were written for and by my heroes in model airplanes.

If postage cost is the problem, why not offer an electronic version?

I've thought about subscribing a number of times, but the cost to mail it to Canada is too high for me.  An electronic version would have been more appealing.

I think low volume is the issue, not postage.

Personally I want the HARD copy & am willing to pay for printing and delivery.

There's plenty of free reading on the computer.  I doubt that I would ever pay for computer reading.  I believe that most people feel the same about paying for a computer read.

You are certainly wrong about the last, most people are quite willing to pay for on-line magazines in general. That's why paper magazines are going out of business a warp speed. I don't deny that some people (such as you) *want* a paper magazine, but would you pay, say, $120 a year? $200? There's got to be some limit.  If John jacked the price up to cover all the costs for a distribution of, say, 100 copies, most of the current subscribers would be on here complaining about it.

I am sure that volume does have something to do with it, mostly because as the volume drops, the overhead becomes prohibitive to pass along. I have assumed that CL World was subsidized as an advertising tool for Brodak, and at some point is does not make sense any more. Note that before someone jumps up my *ss about it again - having a quasi-ad-supported in-house magazine *is a great idea*. I use Estes "Model Rocket News" as an example of an outstanding in-house magazine that was valuable on its own merits and there's nothing about CL World that couldn't be the same way.

Postage was/is  *always* a budget issue with PAMPA and Stunt News, as well, particularly later on. It is the vast majority of the cost of the magazine, and it was even more outrageous for foreign members. Hosting it on-line is practically free by comparison.

Stunt News should be combined with Control Line World. Like the Gadsden flag says, Join or die.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

Some random thoughts on this news

I Imagine getting and editing new materiel that is relevant is a royal pain

I am a relatively new subscriber since 2014

So I have a strange perspective I think... each issue lately is a real downer to read:

We have lost a fair number of significant C/L (pioneers?) and or just good, likable, gentleman and their spouses...I find myself dreading some of the reading....hard for me to imagine what a true, younger generation, newbie thinks

I never met most of the departed, but have spent 40 years or more reading about them and their accomplishments or advise

I guess I am spoiled, but the black and white photos (while I understand the lack of color due to cost) also detract from my enjoyment of the mag

I am sad to see it pass, just as I am frustrated that this is last year of the Brodak's fly in; I am desperately trying to add to my schedule.... funny, I didn't feel this way about missing Woodstock
