I think low volume is the issue, not postage.
Personally I want the HARD copy & am willing to pay for printing and delivery.
There's plenty of free reading on the computer. I doubt that I would ever pay for computer reading. I believe that most people feel the same about paying for a computer read.
You are certainly wrong about the last, most people are quite willing to pay for on-line magazines in general. That's why paper magazines are going out of business a warp speed. I don't deny that some people (such as you) *want* a paper magazine, but would you pay, say, $120 a year? $200? There's got to be some limit. If John jacked the price up to cover all the costs for a distribution of, say, 100 copies, most of the current subscribers would be on here complaining about it.
I am sure that volume does have something to do with it, mostly because as the volume drops, the overhead becomes prohibitive to pass along. I have assumed that CL World was subsidized as an advertising tool for Brodak, and at some point is does not make sense any more. Note that before someone jumps up my *ss about it again - having a quasi-ad-supported in-house magazine *is a great idea*. I use Estes "Model Rocket News" as an example of an outstanding in-house magazine that was valuable on its own merits and there's nothing about CL World that couldn't be the same way.
Postage was/is *always* a budget issue with PAMPA and Stunt News, as well, particularly later on. It is the vast majority of the cost of the magazine, and it was even more outrageous for foreign members. Hosting it on-line is practically free by comparison.
