AMA Dues
« on: July 14, 2025, 05:33:43 PM »
I resubscribed to the AMA yesterday, (expired last August) even though I haven't flown since 1975.  My reasons were twofold.

I support the hobby and I want to keep my AMA number, just in case. You never know.

And, you are keeping people, who otherwise, could be on welfare.

I have dropped out several times, the most recent was a 10 year span and never lost my number. Not sure how long they allow a lapse before numbers get recycled.

I was out for 30 years as well.  I got my original number from 1958 back but I could not get my CD number.  Worst part they claimed I never had one, even with a copy of an old license and my certificate from Johnny Clemens that he gave me personally.  Seems they lost things in the Washington move.  I don't think they reuse 5+ digit numbers anymore so sitting out is safe(er).

Me too....
They said they had a fire or had lost a lot of 50's records and I could get my original number back if I could show proof.
So I did.
I dug out my original that had been plastic laminated then scanned it and emailed to the AMA.
So now I have my 54' 4 digit number back...this was about 10 years ago.

Worth a try.  This was about 8 years ago, maybe they have cleaned some things up.  I lost the card in a fire but I still have the certificate.

Thanks - Ken

Back in the mid 70's, I let my AMA membership go because of a major relocation, new home and new job.  Gone were my flying buddies, hobby shop and place to fly.  A few years later, I thought of restoring my membership but my number had been reissued.  I didn't want a different number, so I let it go for some time.  As luck would have it, the guy who had been issued my number had not renewed so the next time I checked, my number was available again.  I jumped on that and re-upped and have stayed with it to this day keeping my number safe and sound.

How cheap was my dad. He had a number where 2 digets had doubles. It was 34114 or something like that. He applied to the AMA for a shorter number and got, I think 637. He was happy he didn't have to buy so many decal sheets until he saw my number 59229. He flipped LOL ;D. Shortly after I started painting my numbers on the wing. I wonder if AMA still has that program where you can get a shorter number.

No idea why, but I applied for AMA membership at my first contest ever, Jan. 1, 1963, "THE MISERY MEET", a free flight contest. The number I got a few weeks later by official government messenger was 4 digits. Around 1970 or so, I became a CD and the number stayed the same. Did some CD work again in the early 2000's, but then AMA started wanting the contest reports by electrons, and I wouldn't do it.

My dues went way up, but the aggravation went way down. Running the contest isn't so bad, but it really bugs me when a bunch of non-contest club members show up and sit in the shade flapping their gums instead of helping, and if asked, do as requested for 20 minutes and then go sit in the shade and return to gassing off.  HB~> Steve

I joined the AMA in 1975 and was issued 28784, without really knowing much about how the issued the numbers. Somewhere along the line, after a few years, some one commented to me, " Boy !, you must be old to have a 5 digit AMA number that low!!" And that kind of offended me!!  And it was my first look into AMA numbers and their history! I'm thinking my number was a reissue, because several others I know that joined about the same time were all in the 3xxxxrange or even 6 digits.
