Title: Aluminum Motor Mounts
Post by: JHildreth on April 27, 2020, 02:10:53 PM
I am planning a new build that will use a radial style engine mount.  The mount I am looking for consists of a pair of aluminum "beams" cut from aluminum plate.  Years ago two or three companies (maybe SIG or Dubro or other) offered these in several sizes depending on engine displacement.  I have been unable to locate any.  Does anyone have information about such a mount.  I know about the nylon mounts that are available.  These won't work for what I am trying to do.  I want to be able to remove the tank through the firewall without having to remove the mount.  The circular footprint of the nylon mounts prohibit this.

If I have to have the mounts custom cut at a local machine shop, what grade of aluminum would I need to specify?

SIG sold aluminum mounts that were sort of a T shape that had a leg that attached to the fire wall and a leg that was 90 degrees to that on which the engine was mounted. These were sold in sets, and you spaced them as required so that they were kind of universal. SIG had the material custom extruded in that shape in long bars and them cut the mounts themselves and packaged them. If I remember correctly, they quit making them because something happened to the dies and the cost of replacing them was prohibitive so they went the plastic route like other manufacturers. Dubro makes something similar but it is engineered as a vibration absorbing mount, and comes in about 5 or 6 sizes. It's a die cast aluminum. Check out their web site for more information and specs.
  Type at you later,

Hello Joe,
I am not sure what you typed into Google but there are all manner of aluminium motor mounts available on the net.

OS make aluminium engine specific motor mounts available from Tower Hobbies. Work out your mount spacings to match?

Du-Bro have a 4 stroke mount, not sure why a mount is 4 stroke and not a 2 stroke as well?? But I think it is the type you might be after. Most of the Australian hobby shops have them.

Joe, 6061 bar stock aluminum is available in any machine shop. Personally, I think an aluminum engine mount is too rigid. It will spread engine vibration through all of the airframe. Rubber grommets will help reduce the vibration.
It's simpler to have a zytel engine mount. It's a special plastic that is used on engine mounts of all configurations nowadays. It absorbs vibration, it's lighter, and does the least amount of damage to the airframe in case of a crash.
